Stormwater and You! March 26, 2018
What is largest source of pollution to our Country s rivers and streams? Wastewater plants? Industrial discharges? Stormwater runoff? Answer Stormwater runoff
What is Storm Water? Water originating during and immediately after a rain and / or snow events o Soaks into ground ~ becomes groundwater o Evapotranspirates ~ becomes atmospheric o Stays on surface ~ becomes runoff A concern for two main issues o Volume and timing ~ flooding o Pollutants and contaminants ~ water quality Also a commodity o Finite resource becoming more and more scarce o Arid region practices coming our way (harvesting, reuse, etc.)
This Afternoon s Presentation Overview of surface water quality issues Description of Chester County s efforts Summary of actions we all can take Solicitation of input on County activities
Common Misperceptions Runoff is treated at wastewater plants Fact Runoff flows directly to surface waters o Non-mechanized treatment (ponds, rain gardens, etc.) can reduce pollutant loads o Minimizing pollutants at source more cost-effective
Common Misperceptions Big polluters are the culprits Fact We all contribute to stream degradation o Lawn chemicals, vehicular fluids, pet wastes,.. o Better awareness needed
What is Polluting Chester County s Waterways? Nutrients Siltation / suspended solids Organics / low dissolved oxygen (D.O.) Pesticides Pathogens Polychlorinated biphenyl (PCBs)

Pocopson Home Jones Restroom Renovation Complete demolition and renovation of all resident and staff restrooms on 1 st floor. 3 rd and 5 th floors to be completed in Brings restrooms up to current PA Department of Health and ADA standards. Energy efficient LED lighting and water saving plumbing devices. Flows into Waste Water Treatment Plant down by +/-30% as a result of water saving measures installed over past 3 years.
Exton Library Boiler Replacement Replaced 1970 s-era multi sectional cast-iron boiler that was beyond its expected useful life and low efficiency. Installed a pair of gas-fired condensing boilers, each rated at 600,000 BTU s. The installation of these boilers achieves two goals - avoiding a boiler failure that could put the Exton Library out of service while repairs are made and realizing the energy savings inherent in the operation of a modern condensing boiler versus the former boiler. Energy savings of +/-30% compared to existing boilers. Part of the ongoing Guaranteed Energy Savings Act (GESA) project with Constellation Energy.
Pocopson Home Dishwasher Replacement Replacement of a 13 year old conveyor dishwasher. Energy Star certified. Reduced rinse water usage. Deep-tank design requires fewer refills, saving water and detergent. After the rack exits the machine, an auto-timer automatically shuts off pumps and the conveyor.
Government Services Center Lighting Control Panels Replacement of seven lighting control panels, which were obsolete. New panels tie into the upgraded building management system. Provides remote light switching capability, overcurrent protection, control logic, time of day and communication in a standard panelboard enclosure. Monitors the energy consumption of the building lighting and plug load power. Part of the ongoing Guaranteed Energy Savings Act (GESA) project with Constellation Energy.
