1 Water Technologies & Solutions Water Technologies & Solutions water treatment solutions for unconventional fuels
2 addressing today s challenges Today, corporations, individuals and governmental bodies are focused on energy issues and rightly so. According to projections from the International Energy Agency, world energy consumption will grow by 56 percent between 2010 and While renewable energy and nuclear power are the world s fastest-growing energy sources, fossil fuels will continue to make up the bulk of energy supply, representing approximately 80 percent of world energy use through To meet the growing global demand for energy, oil and gas producers are using innovative production techniques to tap unconventional resources from shale formations, coal seams, and bituminous sands. Unconventional fuels are redefining the world s supply of energy as we know it; but while the prospects are great, so are the challenges. Water is essential to the production of unconventional fuels, and as the energy sector s demand for water grows alongside the increasing demand for energy, water will continue to be a critical factor in determining the viability of energy projects. Sound water treatment and management is critical to the success of an unconventional drilling and well-field development program. unconventional oil and gas solutions SUEZ s technology portfolio for unconventional fuels is helping customers and the industry to improve operational performance, reduce environmental impact, and increase resource recovery. These technologies, include submersible and surface pumps, pressure control systems, compressors, drilling measurement tools, meters, pipeline solutions, sensors, gas engines for natural gas production and onsite power generation, motors, valves, and water treatment technologies. water treatment and management In oil and gas production, water treatment needs change over time. SUEZ s Water Technologies & Solutions business provides multi-generational water management solutions to enable operators to meet their evolving water quality needs. By leveraging our broad portfolio of chemical monitoring solutions and equipment solutions, we offer a wide range of customizable solutions that enable water reuse and resource recovery. water outsourcing SUEZ offers the world s largest fleet of mobile water treatment systems, treating any water quantity and quality required from traditional or alternative water sources for operations. Using mobile water systems like our MobileFlow*, MPak, MobileRO*, Mobile EDR, and desalination systems, we can provide standardized equipment or systems that can be configured to fit your specific application. chemical solutions SUEZ offers a host of competitively priced chemical solutions and data management tools designed for managing produced water. Whether it is removal of iron, sulfate, or dissolved solids, solid-liquid separations, or dewatering, SUEZ s trained field service representatives can provide the chemicals and services to help your drilling operations run smoothly. core chemistry Shear Resistant Flocculants Green Coagulants Biocides Antiscalant Dispersants Dust Control Foam Suppression Emulsion Breakers Vapor Based Odor Control feed and control equipment Pumps Flow Meters (water/steam/gas) Tanks and Transfer Systems Level Sensing Emulsion Feeders Dry Polymer Feeders Remote Monitoring and Data Telemetry Customized Chemical Feed and Control Skids Mobile Dry Polymer Feed Trailer
3 membrane solutions Electrodialysis Reversal (EDR), and reverse osmosis are are are preferred technologies for desalination and recovery of waters with lower total dissolved solids (TDS). thermal solutions For higher TDS waters (e.g., >50,000 ppm), thermal treatment systems offer the most cost effective solution. SUEZ s knowledge of thermal evaporative treatment systems for flowback and produced water in unconventional gas operations including membrane distillation, fixed evaporators, and crystallizers is built on more than 35 years of experience in the design, delivery, commissioning and service of wastewater and zero liquid discharge (ZLD) systems. Our modular designs, along with our proven evaporative process, can help gas companies substantially lower operational and disposal costs, meet increasingly stringent environmental regulations, and recycle water to reduce demand on local supplies. Our patented Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) produced water evaporators enable customers to achieve significantly higher water recycle rates while reducing chemical use and improving plant availability. Customers can achieve up to 98% recycle rates, reducing total water consumptions by 50%, compared to traditional treatment processes. technology spotlight Texas, USA As part of a strategic partnership, SUEZ and memsys are developing membrane distillation (MD) technology for the unconventional resources marketplace. MD is an innovative cost and energy-efficient brine concentration technology. In a pilot at a commercial disposal well in the Barnett shale basin, the technology demonstrated strong performance on high-salinity produced waters, including: Exceptional robustness through 100% process uptime without any noticeable decline in performance or need for cleaning Stable performance with brine concentrations near saturation (24% TDS by weight) 30 40% energy savings compared to conventional evaporation systems Distillate quality of less than 300 ppm TDS Patended MD combined with a mechanical vapor compressor for lower operating costs Queensland, Australia In Australia, SUEZ is helping coal seam gas explorer and producer QGC develop its unconventional gas reserves and meet the growing demand for cleaner fuel options. The project utilizes gas engines to generate reliable, on-site power for SUEZ s advanced membrane and thermal water treatment technologies which are being installed to desalinate water produced during the extraction of coal seam gas. The water treatment facility is designed to treat more than 500,000 barrels per day so it can be used on farms, in industry and as town supply. Alberta, Canada In Canada, SUEZ is working with Brion Energy to supply a produced water evaporator system for its 35,000 barrel per day Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) MacKay River project located near Fort McMurray. SUEZ s patented evaporative technology will enable Brion to recover 99 percent of its produced water for use as boiler feedwater and eliminate the need for fresh water.
