Envelope Progress
1. Move Away From Large Central HVAC Systems
Toward Smaller Zonal Systems
2. Move Away From All-in-One HVAC Systems
Toward Dedicated Ventilation Systems
3. Right-Size Mechanical Systems
Believe (Do) the Load Calculations
Design for Off 1. Dedicated Outdoor Air System with Energy Recovery 2. Zoned Heating and Cooling Equipment - Cycling on Load. 3. Size Ventilation Volumes and Heating/Cooling Equipment to Actual Calculated Loads
Before and After Energy Use 180! 160! 140! 120! Energy Use Reduction Gas 99% Electric 39% Total 70% kbtu/sf/yr! 100! 80! 60! 40! Elec! Gas! 20! 0! Pre-Retrofit! Post Retrofit!
Plan for Successful Retrofit 1. Set aside capital improvement money 2. Schedule improvements based on expected lifespan of equipment 3. Select replacement systems based on goals of organization over next 20-years (Low energy, Carbon Neutral) 4. Perform replacement work before equipment failure

KING COUNTY INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT Contracted Funding $114,210! Based on estimated savings of 423,000 kwh! Savings calculated from an equest model! Still in the verification process! Performance-based funding (savings proven from actual usage regression analysis)! No credit for gas savings still getting high savings despite switching from gas to electric heat! Funding helps bridge the gap of the incremental cost! Equipment needed replacing soon anyway; our funding helped cover the cost difference between basic equipment replacement and a high-efficiency system 28
NORTHWEST ENERGY EFFICIENCY ALLIANCE Very-High Efficiency DOAS Initiative! High efficiency heat recovery (85%+)! High efficiency equipment (VRF or Hydronic Heat Pumps)! 8 pilot projects conducted (including King Co. Airport) Future Efforts! Aiming to drive the market towards higher efficiency heat recovery & HVAC systems! Targeting small & medium commercial with packaged rooftop units or simple ducted systems in office, retail, and schools Bretnie.Eschenbach@seattle.gov 29
SEATTLE CITY LIGHT INCENTIVES Contact SCL early in the project! Bring your ideas; even before the project has been clearly defined Pre-approval Required! A site visit confirms existing conditions, which savings calculations and funding are based on.! Incentive is based on kwh/year saved and the expected measure life! Savings calculations can range from quick and simple to long and complicated allow some time for verifications and calculations.! SCL will put together a rebate agreement outlining what will be required for payment (monitoring, verification, invoices, etc.)! Contract is delivered to customer for signature first, then signed by SCL and returned Post-Installation! Post-installation verifications by SCL to confirm equipment and operation; may require trend-logs or metering! As-built conditions used to calculate final savings! Copies of invoices required on all projects 30
