1 WATERWORKS A NEWSLETTER FOR TEACHERS West Basin Municipal Water District Water Education for your class! West Basin Municipal Water District (West Basin) is proud to offer a variety of FREE water education programs that stimulate curiosity and encourage learning inside and outside of the classroom. West Basin s education programs include water treatment facility tours, science experiments, art and engineering projects that promote awareness and appreciation for our most precious resource...water. All activities support the Common Core State Standards and the Next Generation Science Standards (N.G.S.S.). Take a closer look inside this newsletter to see how West Basin can support your students learning, free of charge. We learned how West Basin cleans wastewater and reuses it! Free field trips & classroom programs Visit the education webpages at for more information and to download reservation forms for your class! My award winning artwork for the Water is Life Art Contest I learned about ocean water desalination on my field trip! High School Grand Prize Winner Seung Woon Ji, Grade 11 West High School, Torrance Bus transportation provided!
2 Water Education Center Tours for Grades 3-12 Water Recycling Facility Tour Improvements A new visitor center is currently under construction at West Basin s Edward C. Little Water Recycling Center in El Segundo. The new facility will include educational displays and tours! Join us next year for the grand opening of the new center and revamped recycled water tour! Take your students on a free, hands-on field trip to West Basin s Water Education Center and SEA Lab, a community aquarium in Redondo Beach. During this trip, students explore interactive exhibits explaining Southern California s limited water supply and will investigate West Basin s attempts to develop a local, drought-proof water supply. They will learn how these water conservation efforts are protecting the marine environment. They will also have an opportunity to participate in the live marine animal touch-tank presentation. A complimentary school bus is provided. This water education program supports the Common Core and N.G.S.S. Visit the education webpages at for further program and reservation details.

GRADE 3 All About Water A teacher s guide with 26 hands-on experiments and activities that teach about water use, conservation, the water cycle and water quality. GRADES 4-5 Admiral Splash Teaches students about the water cycle, history of water in Southern California, water sources and supply through the use of student books, tests, stickers and home water-use surveys. GRADE 5 Water Ways Designed to supplement the 5th grade social studies curriculum, students can discover and compare water uses, sources, problems, geographic areas and attitudes during the Pre-Columbian, Colonial, and Westward Movement periods in American History. GRADE 6 Water Times A water education newspaper designed for 6th grade students in Southern California. The interdisciplinary subjects, age-relevant stories and engaging activities create an awareness and stewardship of water. GRADES 6-8 Conservation Connection: Water and Energy in Southern California This new interdisciplinary curriculum supplement, through hands-on conservation activities, role playing and critical thinking, will engage middle school students in learning about the challenges and importance of conserving both water and energy at home and at school. Through the lessons, service-learning activities, and featuring on-line water and energy use surveys, students will make the connection to making water and energy conservation a way of life in Southern California.
5 Solar Cup Competition Program Highlight Student Resources Encourage your students to become Water Star Detectives and help me find clues to figure out which monster is the water wasting culprit! Visit to play! Congratulations to the hard working high school teams for last year s success! West Basin sponsors Solar Cup teams for a seven month school program in which hundreds of high school students build and race a solar powered boat in the world s largest solar boat competition in May. During the program, the students gain hands-on experience in carpentry, engineering, natural resources management, and water conservation issues. West Basin is proud to be a sponsor every year! Visit to view photos of all four teams seven-month-long effort to the finish line! Play the Water Monster Game This fun and interactive video game also teaches students easy and inexpensive ways to conserve water at home by collecting detective clues and solving the water wasting mystery.
