1 RECONNAISSANCE SOIL & SITE EVALUATION Bowmantown Road Lot Person County, NC Catena Job # 7585 Prepared For: Mr. Keith Brouillard Carolina Forestry 314 W. Millbrook Rd Suite 121 Raleigh, NC Prepared By: 410-B Millstone Drive Hillsborough, NC Tel (919) May 15, 2014 John C. Roberts
2 INTRODUCTION & SITE DESCRIPTION This Reconnaissance Soil & Site Evaluation was performed on a 3.41 acre lot located on the north side of Bowmantown Road, Person County, NC (Tax Parcel # 767). The Catena Group, Inc. (Catena) was retained to identify areas that are suitable for placement of subsurface septic systems. The property was evaluated in accordance with North Carolina statutes for waste disposal ( Laws and Rules for Sewage Treatment and Disposal Systems, amended June 2006). SITE HISTORY AND INVESTIGATION METHODOLOGY The study area is comprised mainly of woods. An abandoned cabin was noted in the southern part of the property. Soil borings were advanced with a hand-auger and soil color was determined with a Munsell Soil Color Chart. Observations of the landscape (slope, drainage patterns, etc.) as well as soil properties (depth, texture, structure, soil wetness, restrictive horizons, etc.) were recorded. Each soil boring was located in the field using a hand-held GPS unit with sub-meter accuracy and marked with blue flagging. FINDINGS The field survey was conducted on May 9, 2014, by John C. Roberts, LSS. Seven (7) soil borings were advanced, logged, and their locations noted on Figure 1. Detailed soil boring descriptions are attached. Soil borings 1 and 4-7 were rated as Provisionally Suitable for Conventional Systems. Surfaces typically exhibited a firm or friable, loam or sandy loam texture with moderate, medium, granular structure ranging in depth from 4 to 12 inches. Upper argillic subsurface horizons exhibited a firm clay texture with weak to moderate, medium, subangular blocky structure ranging in depth from 30 to greater than 36 inches. Lower subsurface horizons exhibited saprolite or firm clay loam or clay textures with weak, coarse, subangular blocky structure. A range of the long term acceptance rates (LTAR) of 0.25 to 0.3 gal/day/sqft should be expected for these soil borings. Soil boring 2 is rated as Provisionally Suitable for Modified/Alternative Systems. This soil boring exhibited a friable sandy loam surface with weak, medium, granular structure to 10 inches. The upper argillic subsurface horizon exhibited a friable clay loam texture with weak, medium, subangular blocky structure to 16 inches. The lower argillic horizon exhibited a firm clay texture with weak, medium, subangular blocky structure to 26 inches. Unsuitable parent material was noted beginning at 26 inches. Septic systems installed in soils rated as Provisionally Suitable for Modified/Alternative Systems will likely require a soil cap placed over the septic system footprint. A LTAR of 0.25 gal/day/sqft should be expected for this soil boring. Soil boring 3 was rated as Unsuitable. These soils have insufficient depth to support any Conventional or Modified/Alternative septic system. Limiting soil characteristics include soil wetness and massive structure. Also observed within the Unsuitable Soil area were erosional gullies. Bowmantown Road Lot 1 May 15, 2014
3 DISCUSSION An area of Provisionally Suitable Soils for Conventional and/or Modified/Alternative Systems was identified within the study area. Approximately 10,000 to 15,000 sqft of usable soil would be required for the initial system and repair area for a four-bedroom home. This area will need to be completely available for placement of the septic system. CONCLUSIONS The findings presented herein represent Catena s professional opinion based on our Reconnaissance Soil and Site Evaluation and knowledge of the current laws and regulations governing on-site wastewater systems in North Carolina statutes for waste disposal ( Laws and Rules for Sewage Treatment and Disposal Systems, amended June 2006). An area rated as Provisionally Suitable Soils for Conventional and/or Modified/Alternative Systems was observed within the study area. Based on the current soil characteristics, it appears 10,000 to 15,000 sqft of usable soil will support an initial system and repair area for a four-bedroom home. Soils naturally change across a landscape and contain many inclusions. As such, attempts to quantify them are not always precise and exact. Due to this inherent variability of soils and the subjectivity when determining limiting factors, there is no guarantee that a regulating authority will agree with the findings of this report. This report does not guarantee or represent approval or issuance of an Improvement Permit, which can only be authorized by the Person County Health Department. Bowmantown Road Lot 2 May 15, 2014
