1 industries Overview This standard addresses the competence required to monitor and evaluate the organisation's performance in energy efficiency against its own declared policy and against best practice. This standard deals with the following: 1. Establish systems and processes to monitor and evaluate energy usage 2. Obtain, analyse and record information on energy efficiency performance 3. Evaluate the organisation's energy efficiency performance This activity is likely to be undertaken by someone whose work role carries out processing related work activities. This could include individuals working in the following industries, Chemical, Pharmaceutical, Petro-Chemicals and Nuclear. 1

2 industries Performance criteria You must be able to: P1 agree with relevant people the scope and objectives of the evaluation P2 establish monitoring systems and processes which cover the factors that affect energy usage P3 identify performance measured and assessment tools and techniques which are appropriate to the scope and objectives of the evaluation P4 identify relevant and effective sources of information on energy usage P5 fully review existing internal information systems before establishing new systems P6 correctly identify and gain approval for, the resources needed to implement new systems P7 monitor systems and processes are clearly, fully and accurately documented P8 give relevant people adequate and accurate information about the evaluation P9 establish that individuals and teams provide information necessary for the evaluation and improvement of energy performance P10 obtain sufficient, relevant information regularly to allow an accurate and complete analysis to be made P11 take appropriate corrective action in the event of any weaknesses, confusions or discrepancies in the information P12 confirm your analysis takes account of information from suppliers on the energy efficiency of their products, services and processes P13 confirm your analysis is sufficient to reveal opportunities for improvements in energy usage 2

3 industries P14 record and store information obtained and the conclusions of the analysis in line with organisational requirements P15 regularly report accurate, relevant and up-to-date information on the organisation's energy performance to appropriate people P16 use appropriate methods to evaluate energy use and efficiency P17 accurately record the results of the evaluation, the criteria for evaluation and any assumptions made P18 accurately identify potential areas for improvement and compare these with current organisational performance and current best practice P19 make recommendations for improvements which are consistent with the organisation's energy policy and procedures P20 communicate your recommendations promptly to the appropriate people 3

5 industries information for the analysis and how to ensure that you have it K16 how to assess whether information is sufficient and relevant and what corrective action to take if it is not K17 how to analyse the information in order to identify opportunities for improvements K18 how to record and store information K19 people who can provide information and how to encourage them to do so K20 the organisation's policies and procedures on energy management and the recording and storing of information K21 how to devise and communicate recommendations for improvements K22 current best practice in energy efficiency K23 the reporting procedures which need to be followed K24 the range of evaluation methods you could use and how to decide which one(s) to use K25 how to develop clear criteria for evaluation K26 how to specify the assumptions that you have made K27 how to use the findings of the evaluation to identify potential areas for improvement K28 the information different people need and when they need it K29 the policies and procedures of the organisation regarding the efficient use of energy 5

6 industries Glossary The following terms have a specific meaning in this unit: Appropriate people Refers to higher-level managers or sponsors, colleagues working at the same level as yourself and technical specialists Codes of practice Refers to guidelines which the organisation has voluntarily agreed to follow Energy cost statements Refers to the documents that record the cost of energy consumed by a defined operational area within a specific time period Energy policies Refers to guidelines which cover the way that energy is used in the organisation Legislation Refers to the laws relevant to the use of energy and its impact, for example, on the environment or health and safety Management Information Systems The systems, often computerised, designed to give managers up-to date information about so that they can take prompt action in the event of variances or opportunities 6

7 industries Monitoring records Refers to those documents which record the use of energy over time The organisation Refers to the organisation with which you are working to improve its energy efficiency (this may be different from the organisation that employs you) Your organisation The organisation which employs you (this may be different from the organisation with which you are working to improve its efficiency) Relevant people Refers to higher-level managers or sponsors, colleagues working at the same level as yourself and other staff Resources Includes the money, people, time, equipment, materials, services, energy and premises which you have at your disposal Refers to the area and activities of the organisation which are covered by the evaluation In performing effectively in this unit, you will show that you: Communicating Identify the information need of the listeners Adopt communication styles appropriate to listeners and situations, including selecting an appropriate time and place 7
