Get The Job Réussir son entretien en anglais What are your salary expectations?
What does the recruiter want to know? What salary makes the job attractive to you! That you know the value of your work & the market value of the job You re flexible
How can you know what s reasonable? In France, sites like meilleuresentreprises.com & glassdoor.fr International: glassdoor.com, payscale.com, & salaryexpert.com You can select geographic location for the job
WARNING! I talked to hiring managers about these sites. Here s what they said: good for an approximate estimate, but take it with a grain of salt misleading, irrelevant, unreliable They don t always include other benefits in compensation packages
Structure your answer 1. Briefly highlight the skills & value you bring to the company 2. Give an acceptable salary range, in kilo dollars or kilo euros per year 3. Say your expectations also depend on other forms of compensation 4. Ask what is included in the compensation package
Highlight your value: Key expressions I m interested in finding a position that matches my skill level, experience and interests. Taking into consideration the fact that I have XX years of experience, that I have already (key experience or accomplishment), and (another experience or accomplishment)
Highlight your value: Key expressions Well, thanks to the experience I have in (job field), the fact that I ve (accomplishment or experience), and (accomplishment or experience) And these last 2 transition directly to the discussion of the salary range
Acceptable salary range: Key expressions based on my research, I understand that 48 to 56K per year is typical based on the role, requirements, and my experience. my research suggests that 48 to 56K seems to be fair compensation for this position for someone with my experience and performance record.
Acceptable salary range: Key expressions I ve done some research and from my understanding, a range from 48 to 56K seems to be current on the market for this type of position and my profile. I feel that 59 to 67K is reasonable for someone with my profile and experience. If my research is correct, it s a bit above the average salary for this position, but I feel that I bring a lot of added value to this position, that goes beyond the average (job title).
Saying you re flexible: Key expressions But I understand that there may be other factors to consider. But also, salary expectations also depend on other forms of compensation included.
Saying you re flexible: Key expressions That being said, I know salary is sometimes just one part of the compensation package, so I m willing to be flexible depending on other factors to consider. Of course, the actual figure will depend also on other variables.
Asking what s included: Key expressions Can you tell me more about the company is thinking about offering for this position? So far, I m impressed with what the job offers in terms of career development. Maybe you can tell me more about what s offered in terms of compensation. What exactly is the compensation structure for this position?
Example answer #1: Taking into consideration the fact that I have 22 years of experience, that I have already successfully launched marketing campaigns in 5 different countries and that in my previous jobs, my work led to increased turnover for the company, my research suggests that 48 to 56K seems to be fair compensation for this position for someone with my experience and performance record. But I understand that there may be other factors to consider. Can you tell me, what exactly is the compensation structure for this position?
Example answer #2: I m interested in finding a position that matches my skill level, experience and interests. I feel that 59 to 67K is reasonable for someone with my profile and experience. If my research is correct, it s a bit above the average salary for this position, but I feel that I bring a lot of added value to this position, that goes beyond the average production director. That being said, I know salary is sometimes just one part of the compensation package, so I m willing to be flexible depending on other factors to consider. Maybe, can you tell me more about the company is thinking about offering for this position?
If you re applying in the US: Salary is often part of a compensation package that may include: Performance bonuses retirement contributions signing bonuses insurance plans future pay raises flexible work hours additional vacation company stock
If you re applying in the US: Health care is very expensive Social security covers very little Each person saves for their personal retirement and the company may match the savings (401k) No legal minimum paid vacation (!) These benefits can make a HUGE difference in your budget
If you re applying in the US: American companies can ask for official proof of past salaries (W-2 form) If you ask for a salary that is much higher than in the past, be prepared to explain why EX. The figures on my W-2 do not reflect my value today, because I feel that I m underpaid for my skills. This is part of the reason why I m looking to change companies.
Final tips: If you don t do your research, you risk asking for a price that is too low. This is bad for credibility. Give a range of acceptable salaries The lowest figure should be just a little higher than what your comfortable with Aim high but make it clear you can negotiate
$$ Final tips: Your ideal salary $$ Your true target salary $ The minimum you can accept
