Batterers in the Workplace: A Batterer Program Provider s Perspective Juan Ramos Senior Program Director Domestic Violence Accountability Program Safe Horizon
What is a Batterer Program? Used as a tool of accountability by mandating sources to respond to domestic violence offenses. Provides attendance records and notifications of non-compliance to mandating sources. A responsible batterer program provider will always check with local battered woman advocates regarding policies and materials used.
Why Not Refer a Batterer to Anger Management? Anger Management suggests the individual cannot control anger. Most batterers control anger very well when confronted with daily stressors. Most batterers are never abusive to strangers, co-workers or others understanding that they will be held accountable.
What Happens in a Batterer Program? Batterers hear information regarding domestic violence, including the role of the program, and the mandate they are expected to follow. Individual batterers can make changes to their behavior. Attendance does not indicate behavior change. A batterer may behave one way at the program and another way with the victim.
How Would A Batterer s Program Work with an Employer and/or EAP? Once aware of an incident, employers should have options for addressing the issue of an employee who is a batterer. A program could be one tool used with an employee for violating a workplace violence or domestic violence in the workplace policy.
How Would A Batterer s Program Work with an Employer and/or EAP? Batterer programs can report attendance as an indication of whether or not an employee is taking the mandate and policies seriously. Attendance does not mean change, it only shows the individual is responding to the mandate.
If I send my employee to a Batterer Program, are they cured? Batterer programs should not be viewed as a cure for abusers. They should be used to enforce rules and a zero tolerance for domestic violence, which will promote social change. Focusing on batterer programs as a cure for abusers derails energy and resources better placed on changing systems, social norms and community response efforts.
