1 Higher National Unit Specification General information for centres Unit code: DM0V 34 Unit purpose: To introduce candidates to the concept, history and workings of the Creative Industries and to develop their understanding of how an elected vocational area fits within the overall structure of the sector. On completion of the Unit the candidate should be able to: 1. Explain the background and concept of the Creative Industries sector in the UK. 2. Identify the roles and opportunities available within an elected vocational area of the Creative Industries sector. 3. Identify the issues and support mechanisms that influence an elected vocational area within the Creative Industries sector. Credit points and level: 1 HN Credit at SCQF 7 (8 SCQF credit points at SCQF level 7*) *SCQF credit points are used to allocate credit to qualifications in the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF). Each qualification in the Framework is allocated a number of SCQF credit points at an SCQF level. There are 12 SCQF levels, ranging from Access 1 to Doctorates. Recommended prior knowledge and skills: Candidates should be able to demonstrate good research and communication skills. Core skills: There may be opportunities to gather evidence towards core skills in this Unit, although there is no automatic certification of core skills or core skills components. Context for delivery: If this Unit is delivered as part of a group award, it is recommended that it should be taught and assessed within the subject area of the group award to which it contributes. Assessment: This Unit could be assessed by a single instrument of assessment, requiring candidates to produce and present an illustrated report or reports addressing issues highlighted in the Outcomes. It would also be possible to break this assessment down into three separate events that will assess each Outcome separately. HN Unit (DM0V 34): 1

2 Higher National Unit specification: statement of standards Unit code: DM0V 34 The sections of the Unit stating the Outcomes, knowledge and/or skills, and evidence requirements are mandatory. Where evidence for Outcomes is assessed on a sample basis, the whole of the content listed in the knowledge and/or skills section must be taught and available for assessment. Candidates should not know in advance the items on which they will be assessed and different items should be sampled on each assessment occasion. Outcome 1 Explain the background and concept of the Creative Industries sector in the UK. Knowledge and/or skills Principal constituent elements of the sector History and development of the Creative Industries Economic and cultural importance of the Creative Industries Synergy within the sector Evidence requirements Candidates will need evidence to demonstrate that they can explain the background and concept of the Creative Industries sector in the UK. The evidence should be presented in the form of either a 300 word report or an oral/audio visual presentation (3 minutes) which accurately defines the Creative Industries in the UK explaining how the sector has developed. Candidates will identify the main vocational areas within the Creative Industries and give examples of how such areas interface with each other and quantify the effects of the Creative Industries on the UK economy. Assessment guidelines The assessment of this Outcome may be combined with Outcomes 2 and 3 as part of a single assessment for this Unit. Further detail of this assessment option is included under Outcome 3 below. Outcome 2 Identify the roles and opportunities available within an elected vocational area of the Creative Industries sector. 3 Higher National Unit specification: statement of standards (cont) Evidence requirements Candidates will need evidence to demonstrate their skills and/or knowledge by showing that they can describe ways of working within an elected vocational area of the Creative Industries. The evidence should describe, in a creative manner, through either a 300 word report or an oral/audio visual presentation (3 minutes), roles, jobs and self-employment opportunities available within an elected vocational area and analyse the range of work and responsibilities as an employee and as a selfemployed practitioner. Assessment guidelines The assessment of this Outcome may be combined with Outcomes 1 and 3 as part of a single assessment for this Unit. Further detail of this assessment option is included under Outcome 3 below. Where assessment might be conducted on Outcome 2 alone, candidates should provide sufficient evidence that they have responded to all of the evidence requirements above. Alternative means of providing evidence, for example by portfolio submission, may be considered. Outcome 3 Identify the issues and support mechanisms that influence an elected vocational area within the Creative Industries sector Knowledge and/or skills Impact of technology and technical developments Legal and statutory controls Health and Safety issues Business and financial support organisations Industry and professional associations Evidence requirements Candidates will need evidence to demonstrate their knowledge and/or skills by showing that they can: describe the issues and support mechanisms that affect an elected vocational area within the Creative Industries sector. Candidates will compile either an 300 word report or an oral/audio visual presentation (3 minutes) that describes and evaluates the impact of technology and technical developments and provide reference to pertinent legal constraints and statutory controls. Examples of pertinent health and safety issues, relevant support organisations and associations and the support role provided by financial organisations and professional associations will be explained also. Assessment guidelines The assessment of this Outcome may be combined with Outcomes 1 and 2 as part of a single assessment for this Unit. Further detail of this assessment option is included below. Where assessment might be conducted on Outcome 3 alone, candidates should be required to provide sufficient evidence that they have responded to all of the evidence requirements above. Alternative means of providing evidence, for example by examination style questioning, may be considered. HN Unit (DM0V 34): 3

4 Higher National Unit specification: statement of standards (cont) Single Unit Assessment Option/Opportunity As this unit focuses on an elected vocational area of the Creative Industries it may be appropriate to consider a sectoral medium for delivery of assessment evidence across all 3 Outcomes. This may take the form of an assessed portfolio, a recorded (audio/video) interview or other similar, acceptable sector specific output. A case study (1,000 words) approach to assessment of all 3 Outcomes may also be considered. HN Unit (DM0V 34): 4

6 Higher National Unit specification: support notes This part of the Unit specification is offered as guidance. The support notes are not mandatory. While the exact time allocated to this Unit is at the discretion of the centre, the notional design length is 40 hours. Guidance on the content and context for this Unit This Unit is primarily intended to introduce candidates to the background and concept of the Creative Industries sector in the UK. It should place their elected vocational area in context and explore how constituent elements interface with each other in the sector. Importantly, it should highlight the importance of the whole Creative Industries sector to the economic and cultural wellbeing of the UK. Although the Unit is expressed in generic terms, it should be related to a context that is familiar to candidates. If necessary the terminology used in the Unit can be adapted to suit the relevant vocational area in the Creative Industries. Outcome 1 examines the history and development of the concept of the Creative Industries with particular attention to their economic and cultural importance. It should also answer the questions What is it? and How is it made up? Candidates will be expected to define the Creative Industries as promoted by the UK Government and explain how the sector has developed (A useful reference being - They should be able to delineate the main vocational areas within the Creative Industries and demonstrate synergy within the sector. For example Graphic Design interfacing with Advertising, Music Production working with Broadcast Media, etc. In Outcome 2 candidates will be expected to identify and describe ways of working in the Creative Industries sector. They will be expected to research a range of roles, jobs and self-employment opportunities available within an elected vocational area. They will then select an industry post and examine the roles and responsibilities as an employee and as a self-employed practitioner. The focus of this Unit should be on giving candidates an understanding of the full range of skills (skillset) required in particular posts. Topically, one of the main issues investigated in Outcome 3 is the influence of new technology and technical developments in the Creative Industries. As well as examining legal and statutory controls candidates will be expected to keep abreast of latest developments in their vocational area. Other sectoral issues such as health and safety, sector specific business and professional support should also be explored HN Unit (DM0V 34): 6

7 Higher National Unit specification: support notes (cont) Guidance on the delivery and assessment of this Unit This Unit is likely to form part of a group award that is primarily designed to provide candidates with background knowledge of the Creative Industries sector and professional knowledge related to a specific vocational area. The Unit should be introduced at an early stage in the group award to assist candidates in setting their elected discipline in context within the Creative Industries. Clearly, the Unit should be delivered in such a way that it enables candidates to appreciate the breadth of the Creative Industry sector and its relevance and importance to the UK economy. It would be helpful if it could be arranged for candidates to visit and experience various operations and businesses within the Creative Industries. Assessment guidance has been referenced under each Outcome. Opportunity for centre elected, individual, Outcome-by-Outcome assessment is advised. Open learning This Unit could be delivered by distance learning provided opportunities to attend minimum frequency review seminars at the centre (or visit opportunities to the candidate) could be incorporated to ensure appropriate mentoring of candidate progress. It may be more appropriate under these circumstances that distance-learning candidates engage in the single assessment option rather than the Outcome-by-Outcome assessment. Candidates with additional support needs This Unit specification is intended to ensure that there are no artificial barriers to learning or assessment. The additional support needs of individual candidates should be taken into account when planning learning experiences, selecting assessment instruments or considering alternative Outcomes for Units. 8 General information for candidates This Unit is primarily intended to introduce you to the concept of the Creative Industries sector in the UK. It should place your elected vocational area in context and explore how constituent elements interface with each other in the sector.
