1 JOB DESCRIPTION POST TITLE : Assessor/Instructor Motor Vehicle SALARY SCALE : Point 25 on the College Payscale DATE : November 2014 GENERIC PURPOSE OF POST All colleagues employed directly in connection with the training, teaching and learning experiences of learner/students are expected to meet the standards for teaching and support of learning in further education. All staff are expected to support the College s commitment to safeguarding and child protection. JOB ROLE PURPOSE OF POST To train, support, instruct, assess & teach learners undertaking qualifications in a range of vocational settings. To build on existing partnerships and engage in new partners which ensure the effective delivery of a professional service. To function as an Assessor/Instructor within practical working environments where required. To function as an Instructor within classroom based settings where required including off-site delivery locations. COLLEGE RESPONSIBILITIES In addition to the generic responsibilities referred to above, all colleagues employed directly in connection with the training and learning experiences of students at Stratford-upon-Avon College are expected to undertake the following College related responsibilities. 1. Flexibility To work flexibly as part of a team with cross College responsibilities. 2. Marketing To assist with the recruitment and admission of students and the marketing of courses in particular, and the College, in general. 3. Curriculum Development Where appropriate, to contribute to curriculum development. 4. Quality Assurance To participate fully in undertaking all appropriate aspects of the College s Quality Assurance systems. 5. Staff and Continuous Professional Development As identified, to participate fully in all activities designed to improve the quality of individual, team and College performance. 7. 2 JOB ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Professional/Technical/Procedural Knowledge The job requires theoretical, practical and procedural knowledge at a technical level across the specialist area of assessing candidates and internally verifying work. 2. Complexity of Task(s) The job involves carrying out a wide variety of complex tasks or duties under limited supervision. 3. Decision Making The job involves working within broad practice guidelines, using discretion and initiative over a defined range of activities with periods of infrequent or limited access to a line manager. The job is subject to overall managerial direction. 4. Line Management Responsibility The job involves moderate direct responsibility for the supervision, direction and coordination of other employees. The job involves the allocation of work to a small group or team, the checking of work and the day to day direction of staff. The work involves advising instructing and checking work out-put and providing on-the-job training. 5. Responsibility for Physical/Financial Resources The job involves direct responsibility for a number of physical and/or financial resources clearly defined and limited by range, value or number together with the responsibility for the basic equipment and tools associated with the job. 6. Mental Effort/Level of Concentration and/or Emotional Demands The job requires high level general awareness and involves prolonged periods of intense concentration, involving high-level sensory/mental attention over a range of different activities. The job involves frequent periods of high level work-related pressures e.g. working to deadlines, interruptions, and conflicting demands. 7. Working Environment The job involves minimal exposure to disagreeable, unpleasant or hazardous environmental working conditions. HOURS OF WORK The post holder will normally work variable hours over 52 weeks based on the operational needs of the business. The post holder may be required to undertake some evening and weekend duties as part of their normal working week. DISCLOSURE & BARRING SERVICE From time to time you may be required to undertake duties that involve unrestricted contact with children or vulnerable adults, therefore the offer of employment is subject to a satisfactory Standard/Enhanced Disclosure statement from the Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS). A copy of the DBS s Code of Practice is available on request. 3 PERSON SPECIFICATION POST TITLE: Assessor/Instructor Motor Vehicle Qualifications Appropriate specialist/professional qualification(s) e.g. Degree or equivalent (N.B. Qualifications will normally be held at the minimum level of NVQ 4/5 although in exceptional circumstances relevant experience will be taken into consideration) Good standard of general education to GCSE Level (or equivalent) at Grade C or above in English and Maths Certificate in Post-Compulsory Education and Training (or equivalent) A1 & V1 Awards If these qualifications are not present, they must be acquired as set out in an individual training plan. Progression through the pay band will be linked to qualification achievement. Experience Experience of training/learning environments Experience of training/teaching relevant courses/client groups to include delivering vocational training and mentoring Employment experience in relevant industrial/commercial settings Previous experience of working within a further education environment Desirable Attributes Good interpersonal skills Organised Effective written and spoken communication Enthusiastic Flexible Willing to update and adapt skills as required by the demands of the role Customer focused Entrepreneurship 3

4 SPECIFIC JOB ROLE DUTIES Associated with the post of POST TITLE: POST GRADE: LINE MANAGER: Assessor/Instructor Motor Vehicle Point 25 on the College pay scale Head of Vocational Trades DATE: November 2014 NOTE: The following specific Job Role Duties are current as at the date shown above. These duties will be reviewed, normally annually, and, in consultation with the post holder. The College reserves the right to make such changes as deemed necessary and appropriate in support of effective and efficient operational requirements. 1. To undertake the role of Assessor/Instructor as appropriate and provide support for learners on Vocational Programmes. 2. To carry out Assessor duties on employer premises and in College where necessary, in compliance with industry requirements and awarding body standards. 3. To function as an Instructor within practical working environments where required and produce the highest quality schemes of work, session plans, learning and assessment materials and most appropriate resources to support learning and assessment. 4. To guide and support students in the effective pursuit of their individual learning programme and progression planning. 5. To liaise with the Head of Department regarding further training opportunities arising from, or identified through, assessment and instruction activities. 6. To undertake initial assessment, basic information, advice and guidance following guidelines provided by the College. 7. To develop the volume of candidates in line with the College s strategic priorities. 8. To assist the smooth running of courses (in College, work based, off-site and distance learning as required). 9. To undertake assessment, the maintenance of accurate records, student attendance records, retention and achievement and support of work experience programmes. 10. To provide regular reports of student and programme progress and offer guidance to students on how to improve performance. 11. To maintain a current knowledge of best practice in your area of specialism and demonstrate a commitment to personal and professional development. 4

5 12. To attend standardisation meetings, Course, Team, Sector and College meetings and external meetings appropriate to the post. 13. To represent the College on public occasions, such as recruitment events and to promote the best interests of the institution by creating a positive impression of the College. 14. To contribute to the marketing and promotion of courses in the department. 15. To be aware of the responsibilities under the provision of the Health and Safety at Work Act and the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (COSHH) in terms of your own safety and the effects of your own actions on colleagues, students and visitors. 16. Support and promote the College's policies and carry out duties in a resource efficient way, recognising the shared responsibility of colleagues to deliver sustainable development of the College wherever possible. 5
