3 EDF, the world s largest electricity company and leader in low-carbon energy solutions, has always built its industrial strategy on its core values, combining economic, environmental and social performance. At the Shareholders Meeting a year ago, I presented you our 11 corporate social responsibility (CSR) commitments. I am happy now to report the results achieved in 2013 thanks to the professional excellence of all our employees, their daily involvement in regional development and our clients confidence in us. As a responsible industrial company, employer and partner, EDF must remain ambitious and constantly improve its targets wherever it operates. That is why we strive each day to maintain the safety of all our facilities at the highest level, develop our employees skills and engage in quality dialogue with our stakeholders, while at the same time tackling the growing challenge of climate change. 5 Our prime responsibility lies in the performance of our professional activities. We produce and supply a specific commodity, electricity that is vital for the development of the planet in both human and economic terms. Our position as the world s leading nuclear energy operator leads us to exercise our professional duties, in all our activities, in a spirit of compliance with strict safety standards inculcated by our historic vocation to serve the public interest. We are guided by the conviction that it is our duty to participate in the fight against climate change. This participation manifests itself through the preference for low-carbon energy sources shown by all the companies in our Group. We invest in measures designed to enhance the competitiveness of renewable energies. At the same time we call on a wide range of expertise to help our customers reduce energy loss from their homes. 11 In a fast-changing environment, respect for the human dimension is more than ever at the heart of our strategic policy. This dimension is a pre-requisite for the Group s success. The health and safety of our employees and of those of our sub-contractors are our first priority. In order to meet our industrial challenges, we want to continue to be a high-profile employer, a benchmark in terms of our employees professionalism and commitment, and keen to develop their skills and the diversity of their profiles. Wherever the Group operates, it does so in total compliance with our values, requiring integrity and respect for fundamental rights. 17 Because energy issues concern us all, given that the electricity that we produce transforms people s lives and modifies their environments, we have invested in measures to establish what is hopefully a more meaningful dialogue with our stakeholders.this has been implemented on a range of different geographical scales. The scope for such dialogue is enormous, and we have established our priorities accordingly. To increase transparency concerning subjects about which civil society wishes to be kept informed. To add economic value wherever we establish our installations. To preserve and share water resources, given that these are essential both for our own activities and for those of our fellow citizens. To consolidate our actions in the fight against energy precariousness, at a time when this phenomenon is on the increase due to the effects of the crisis. 21 OUR COMMITMENTS: PRESERVING WATER RESOURCES IN ALL OUR ACTIVITIES EMPLOYEUR A RESPONSIBLE RESPONSABLE PARTNER INDICATOR Publication, starting in 2015, of the water footprint at Group level. Since 2013, EDF has been working with the scientific community and with international bodies representing the coal, nuclear, hydrocarbon and renewable energy sectors to coordinate the development of a tool that can be used throughout the world to assess the impact of all energy sectors on water. 22 Our Corporate Responsibility initiative helps strengthen the identity of our group, whose boundaries now reach around the world. While respecting cultural differences, it seeks to bring together specific economic situations, particularities related to the performance of different trades, and the expectations of our stakeholders. Its goal is to link our companies and subsidiaries around shared commitments in order to achieve increased global performance.
