1 FRICOR6201A Manage sustainability in the workplace Assessment Framework, Checklists, and how to use them This Assessment Framework for the Unit of Competency, FRICOR6201A Manage sustainability in the workplace (Unit) includes Checklists that relate to the Elements and Performance Criteria for the Unit. Once you have appropriately completed these Checklists, you will have an understanding of requirements of the Unit and could apply this understanding to a workplace environment and determine it s level of sustainability. Please complete each Checklist and respond to the Activity questions by referring to the International and Australian Standards (Standards) below. These Standards describe the management of risk associated with Environmental, Safety, Social, Cultural and Economic hazards and risks. AS/NZS ISO14001:2004 Environmental management systems Requirements with guidance for use (Standards Australia); BS AHSAS 18001:2007 Occupational health and safety management systems Requirements; and AS/NZS 4801: 2001 Occupational health and safety management systems Specification with guidance for use (Standards Australia). Once you have completed the Checklist questions, assess your workplace for each Element and Performance Criteria and determine if your workplace meets or exceeds this requirement, and include your decision for your workplace under Finding : C, N or F and describe this in the right hand column. And finally, summarise the outcomes from your assessment in the tables at the back of the Checklist. Outcomes from this assessment process will provide you with: An understanding of what sustainability in the workplace means; The issues that need to be assessed to determine workplace sustainability ; and A framework to determine how an organisation is performing against sustainability criteria ie how sustainable are its activities based on how it is managing its Environmental, Safety, Social, Cultural and Economic risks. This knowledge could be used to conduct a sustainability assessment of a workplace and identify gaps in an organisation s risk management (sustainability) systems and processes, and subsequently: Prepare a proposal for management highlighting the Assessment Framework outcomes; Describe the organisation s workplace sustainability score and what this means; Identify (risk management) gaps and how these might be addressed; and Recommend actions to correct the gaps, including prioritising actions. 2 FRICOR6201A Manage sustainability in the workplace Assessment Framework, what does it mean? 1. About competency assessment This Assessment Framework document is designed to ensure that relevant AQF 6 competency standards are fully met through the appropriate demonstration of task skills, task management skills, contingency management skills, job and role environment skills and underpinning knowledge, to meet the requirements for the Unit of Competency, FRICOR6201A Manage sustainability in the workplace (Unit), a core Unit for the Advanced Diploma in Forest industry sustainability. 2. Assumed knowledge It is assumed that a candidate will have, or have the opportunity to acquire, the following underpinning knowledge, relevant to the Unit: The meaning of sustainability, and the scope of its application in the industry and workplace being addressed. In this case the forest and wood products sector; The role of legislation and practice, centrally determined and implemented internal policy & procedures that focus on promoting and managing a sustainable workplace in the current workplace environment, including: o The connected and integrated nature of sustainability with other areas of compliance and/or policy within the organisation; o The need for, and role of, stakeholder understanding and engagement in developing and implementing policy and practice; and o An understanding of the critical role that communication and workplace culture play in promoting these; The expected and potential role of an AQF6 qualified manager in promoting and managing a sustainable forest and wood products sector workplace. Checklists included in the Appendix at the end of this document, provide a detailed framework for researching the issues and developing knowledge and understanding important to Managing sustainability in the workplace. Once the Checklists are completed, a candidate will be able to demonstrate competence in this area, that could be used to develop an assessment workplace sustainability in Australia s forest and wood products sector. 3. The Assessment Tool Activity 1: Manage sustainability in the workplace The Ideal Imagine that you are responsible for developing a comprehensive model for managing sustainability in the workplace, which will be implemented as a hallmark, best practice program in the operation of a new business unit, or site, that your organisation is developing. Outline the scope, key principles and critical features of the model, including its applicability to the industry/sector that the business is operating in. This model should also clearly outline the role that a manager at your level will play in the management of this program. Activity 2: Evaluate existing policy and practice, against The Ideal Assessment Framework, what does it mean, FRICOR6201A Manage sustainability in the workplace, 28May2014 v2
3 Compare and contrast the sustainability policy and practices of your current workplace with the ideal model that you have established. Identify existing strengths, constraints and gaps in existing policy and practice. Activity 3 Celebrate success and identify improvement There are two key steps: i. Develop communication plan to celebrate success of existing policy and practice. Also, identify opportunities for improvement (constraints and gaps) and provide avenues for stakeholder feedback on same; and ii. In consultation with key stakeholders, propose, consider and select relevant improvements, in policy and practice, which will enhance the management of sustainability in your workplace. Activity 4 Continuous Improvement Plan There is one key step: i. Develop a detailed Continuous Improvement Plan (CIP) to implement changes in the management of sustainability in you workplace. This plan could include: a. Clear and achievable goals (SMART); b. Actions and accountabilities, to ensure the timely and successful implementation of the changes. What documentation could be established, implemented and maintained to describe how an organisation: a. Identifies all its OHS/WHS hazards relevant to its activities, products and services; b. Conducts a hazard/risk assessment for each hazard/risk; c. Determines appropriate controls to manage each hazard/risk; d.
