2 HIGHER NATIONAL UNIT SPECIFICATION STATEMENT OF STANDARDS Unit number: Unit title: FACILITIES MANAGEMENT PROJECT Acceptable performance in this Unit will be the satisfactory achievement of the standards set out in this part of the specification. All sections of the statement of standards are mandatory and cannot be altered without reference to SQA. 1. CARRY OUT A SPACE PLANNING EXERCISE (c) (d) (e) Data is analysed and interpreted correctly. Freehand trial layouts are produced accurately which conform to particular requirements. The final layout selected correctly suits the activity to be performed in the building and takes account of production flow. The flow of activity within the space is accurately planned. The finished layout drawing is accurately produced and suitable for presentation to a client. The range statement for this outcome is fully expressed in the performance criteria. Graphical evidence that a candidate can analyse and interpret data and carry out a space planning exercise as defined in the PCs to (e). A minimum of three trial layouts in freehand sketch form and one final finished layout drawing must be produced to meet the requirements. 2

3 2. PREPARE AN ASSET REGISTER GENERATED ON A COMPUTER DATABASE (c) (d) (e) Database structure created and saved is appropriate for the purpose. Property data is collected and accurately recorded on the computer database. Assets are described unambiguously and their location within the building records and manipulation of data are correct. Input records and manipulation of data are correct. Report generated from the database accurately meets specified criteria. Assets: property; furniture; equipment. Report generated from the computer database together with a computer disk indicating that the candidate has carried out the tasks as defined in PCs to (e). 3. PREPARE A PROCEDURE FOR COMPLIANCE IN THE EVENT OF AN EMERGENCY SITUATION Alternative procedures for dealing with a potential emergency are researched accurately. The procedure selected is correct and clearly presented in a logical sequence. The range statement for this outcome is fully expressed in the performance criteria. Written or oral evidence is required to show that the candidate can research and prepare a procedure for dealing with one emergency situation which may arise within an organisation. 3

4 4. REVIEW THE OPERATIONAL SERVICES REQUIRED FOR THE BUILDING The current operational services which support the core tasks of a business are accurately researched and recorded. The operational services are reviewed and conclusions are presented clearly and in a manner appropriate to the client. Operational services: security; catering and staff welfare; cleaning and waste disposal; internal communications. Written or oral evidence is required to show that the candidate can research the current operational services within an organisation and prepare a review of those services in order to improve the support and react to changing conditions. 5. CARRY OUT A RISK ASSESSMENT FOR A GIVEN HAZARD (c) (d) (e) (f) The hazard is accurately identified. The risk is clearly and accurately identified and analysed. The risk is clearly quantified. The means of reducing or eliminating the risk is clearly identified. Recommendations and choice of action are clearly and accurately set out. The presentation format correctly complies with current practice. The range statement for this outcome is fully expressed in the performance criteria. Written or oral evidence is required to show that the candidate can carry out a risk assessment exercise for a given hazard as defined in PCs to (e). One completed risk assessment must be completed by the candidate. 4

5 MERIT STATEMENT: To gain a pass in this unit, a candidate must meet the standards set out in the outcomes, performance criteria, range statements and evidence requirements. To achieve a merit in this unit, a candidate must demonstrate a superior or more sophisticated level of performance. In this unit this might be shown in the following ways: (c) (d) presentation of the space planning layout; accuracy and detail in preparing the asset register; research evidence and accuracy in preparing the procedure in the event of an emergency; reviewing the operational services and preparing the risk assessment. ASSESSMENT In order to achieve this unit, candidates are required to present sufficient evidence that they have met all the performance criteria for each outcome within the range specified. Details of these requirements are given for each outcome. The assessment instruments used should follow the general guidance offered by the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) assessment model and an integrative approach to assessment is encouraged. (See references at the end of support notes). Accurate records should be made of the assessment instruments used showing how evidence is generated for each outcome and giving marking schemes and/or checklists, etc. Records of candidates achievements should be kept. These records will be available for external verification. SPECIAL NEEDS Proposals to modify outcomes, range statements or agreed assessment arrangements should be discussed in the first place with the external verifier. 6 HIGHER NATIONAL UNIT SPECIFICATION SUPPORT NOTES Unit number: Unit title: FACILITIES MANAGEMENT PROJECT SUPPORT NOTES: This part of the unit specification is offered as guidance. None of the sections of the support notes is mandatory. NOTIONAL DESIGN LENGTH: SQA allocates a notional design length to a unit on the basis of time estimated for achievement of the stated standards by a candidate whose starting point is as described in the access statement. The notional design length for this unit is 80 hours. The use of notional design length for programme design and timetabling is advisory only. PURPOSE The purpose of this unit is to integrate some of the knowledge and skills gained throughout the programme into a single project. The scope of Facilities Management involves the total management of all services that support the core business of an organisation. This is a very broad range of services and this unit therefore covers six areas considered to be important for those candidates pursuing a career within a facilities management organisation. Candidates should be able to develop their Information Technology skills in outcomes 1 and 2 with the use of CAD and database software. CONTENT/CONTEXT Corresponding to Outcomes In this outcome the candidate must carry out a space planning exercise. Candidates should be given sufficient information which will allow them to analyse and interpret the data and produce trial layouts and thereafter, a finished layout suitable for presentation to a client. The initial layout presented to candidates should be a fragmented layout requiring candidates to analyse it and produce a planned layout. The assessment may be, to plan one floor of an office building or of a factory floor but must take account of production flow. Ideally candidates will carry out this space planning exercise using an appropriate CAD software package. 2. In this outcome the candidate has to prepare an asset register for a given situation. The register should be generated on a computer database and must accurately record the property, furniture and equipment. Tutors may elect to restrict the register to one floor of an office or a factory for the recording of furniture and equipment. The register should fully record all information about the property including its condition. 6

7 3. In this outcome candidates must research the procedures for dealing with an emergency situation. It also involves selecting the correct procedure and presenting it in a logical sequence. The emergency situation selected may be: fire; bomb alert; power failure or outbreak of Legionnaires Disease. 4. In this outcome candidates must review the operational services required for a specified facility. The operational services are: security; catering and staff welfare; cleaning and waste disposal; and internal communications. Following the review candidates must present conclusions in a clearly presented manner appropriate for a client. 5. In this outcome candidates must carry out a risk assessment exercise for a given hazard. APPROACHES TO GENERATING EVIDENCE It is recommended that the outcomes be completed in the sequence presented. This will not preclude some integration of the outcomes during teaching, tutorial work and assessment. ASSESSMENT PROCEDURES In order to achieve this unit, candidates are required to present sufficient evidence that they have met all the performance criteria for each outcome within the range specified.
