2 How to reduce the risks to health & safety in the workplace 3.1 The responsibilities for health and safety within the learner s job description Ref: Handout 3.1 Use the handout to reiterate the learners prior learning from Session 1. Ask the learners to complete the handout Safe working practice within the job role Explain and reiterate that it is vitally important to work safely and hygienically in salons. Ref: Handout.3.2 Use the handout with individuals or as a group to highlight the job roles carried out by the learners and how these working practices can be made safe. 3.3 The identification of responsible persons to whom health and safety matters are reported 3.4 Where and when to get additional health and safety assistance Ref: Activity.3.3 Ask the learners to complete the activity by completing the organisational chart. They should highlight the person to who they should report health and safety issues. Learners can use the chart provided or, by linking the activity to key/core skills, they can design their own. 3 This person will usually be the employer, but if learners work in a very large organisation it could well be someone else for example, health and safety officer or the human resource manager. For learners in full time training, the person responsible will be the salon trainer or manager. Stress that it is important to know who this person is, where they can be located and the type of issues or incidents that need to be reported. Tell the learners additional information can be found in the salon s: Health and Safety law poster COSHH information booklet Public Liability insurance certificate Health and safety policy Evacuation procedures Risk assessments. Explain that if there are more than five people employed at a place of work a workplace policy for health and safety must be written and that the policy (and any future revisions) must be brought to the attention of all the employees. The purpose of the policy is to identify any risks at work, to identify any precautions and safe working practices and to show who is responsible for carrying this out The scope and responsibility for rectifying risks, and 3.6. Workplace procedures for handling risks which the learners are unable to deal with It is important for learners to be aware of the risks in the workplace that they can sensibly deal with and those that must be reported to a responsible person in the salon. 4 Ref: Activity.2.1a (from Session 3) Handout.3.5 Use the illustration from Session 3 in which learners identified health & safety hazards in the salon. Now discuss the risks that would need to be referred to a person of responsibility in the salon and those that can be resolved by the learner. Risks to be reported to a responsible person are: Fire exit blocked with heavy boxes Hairdryer with wires exposed Chemical dripping on to the floor from a bottle on a shelf An electrical socket that has too many adaptors and equipment plugged into it A broken mirror needs replacing. Risks that learners can resolve themselves are: Hair cuttings on the floor A pool of water near the basin Handle of a sweeping brush partially blocking a doorway A rubbish bin which is overflowing and the contents are spilling on to the floor A piece of electrical equipment has a trailing flex. Ref: Activity..3.5 Emergency Procedures Ask the learners to draw a plan of their salon indicating the following: The exits for evacuation Where the assembly points are The location of the fire fighting equipment The location of the first aid kit and accident book. 5 3.7 Suppliers and manufacturers instructions for the safe use of equipment, materials and products Explain to learners that following manufacturers instructions is important. The instructions will identify how to make decisions about the service the client is going to receive. In addition they show how to use products and equipment safely and hygienically. Ask learners what might happen if manufacturers instructions were not read before beginning a chemical treatment. Explain that all salons must take out public and treatment liability insurance. If a client is hurt in the salon as a result of negligence by a salon worker, they may have grounds in which to sue the salon. The insurance companies will need to be sure that everything that could have been done to prevent the accident was done. For example, all necessary tests were carried out, the results of the tests were recorded and that manufacturers instructions were read, understood and followed. An insurance company may refuse to pay for legal support in the case of court action or to pay compensation to the client if it can be shown that the salon was negligent by not reading or following manufacturers instructions. In a worst case scenario, the business may have to be sold to pay the client any compensation awarded by the court The importance of personal presentation in maintaining health & safety in the workplace Personal presentation can make a contribution to health & safety in the workplace. 6 Ask the learners how their personal presentation can help to maintain health & safety in the salon. The answers should include the following: Combs and scissors should not be placed in pockets Shoes should be a sensible height to prevent tripping and help maintain good posture Trousers and skirts should not trail on the floor Shoes should be closed at the top to prevent hair entering the skin. Brainstorm the ideas with learners and choose the most relevant for the learners to make a note of The importance of personal conduct in maintaining the health & safety for all Ask learners what personal conduct means to them. Explain to the learner that personal conduct relates to the way salon workers behave in the salon both when working directly on clients on the salon floor, or in other salon areas. Good personal conduct ensures: the overall professionalism of the salon potential accidents are prevented a safe and healthy place of work health & safety legislation is upheld. 7 The policy or rules could cover aspects of: general behaviour for the salon where eating and drinking can take place whether use of prohibited drugs would lead to disciplinary action how to correctly use equipment the systems that are in place with reference to timekeeping how staff absence should be reported how to inform the salon of any illnesses that will involve time away from work the dress code of the salon. Activity.3.9 Produce a Personal Conduct Policy Use the activity sheet as a prompt for learners to write what they expect to see in relation to personal conduct in the salon. The learners can base the result on their own requirements for their own salons or could make a personal conduct policy to meet their own expectations The risks to the environment which may be present in the workplace or job Tell the learners hairdressing products and general salon waste will not present a risk to the environment if disposed of correctly following the manufacturers instructions and the local authority guidelines. Explain that sharp items such as razor blades must always be placed in a sharps box and disposed of by special arrangements with the local authority. Hair and general salon waste should be placed in a lidded bin fitted with a liner. Leftover hairdressing chemicals should be washed down the drain with plenty of water. 8 Ask the learners to identify any salon waste that could be recycled. These should include: paper and cardboard boxes from deliveries and packaging empty plastic and glass containers empty metal containers and foil. The local authority will give guidance on how to safely dispose of all salon waste. Now use the Learner Check for Session 3 to check the understanding of the learner. Page 8 - Unit - Session 3. 11 How to reduce the risks to health & safety in the workplace Trainer Summary 3.1 The responsibilities for health and safety within the learner s job description Remind learners that: The job role of the individual worker will determine the amount of responsibility they hold for health and safety The individual worker must take reasonable care for the general health and safety of themselves and others who may be affected by their failure to act Safe working practice within own job role Remind learners that: Salon workers must be constantly aware of their responsibilities within their job roles in the salon Some staff members, ie, those in responsible positions, will have more responsibility than others Working safely is about teamwork and everyone in the salon should be aware of the actions of others. 3.3 The identification of responsible persons to whom health and safety matters are reported 3.4 Where and when to get additional health and safety assistance Remind learners that: That the person who is responsible in the workplace will be the employer/salon owner/ manager. Workplace procedures for handling risks which the learners are unable to deal with Learners must be aware of the responsibilities they have and that of other people in the salon for health & safety Suppliers and manufacturers instructions for the safe use of equipment, materials and products Manufacturers instructions must be read before using products and equipment Failure to do so could cause harm to self or others in the salon Insurance cover may be void if all due care of the client was not taken by the salon worker The importance of personal presentation in maintaining health & safety in the workplace Personal presentation is an important aspect of health & safety Loose clothing may get caught in hairdryers/ other equipment Long sleeves may hang over the face of the client or become very wet and contaminated with products which can lead to skin allergies. The importance of personal conduct in maintaining the health & safety for all Misbehaving in the salon can lead to accidents or harm to self or others Salons will have rules or a written policy for personal conduct The risks to the environment which may be present in the workplace or job Remind learners that: Hairdressing products and general salon waste will not present a risk to the environment if disposed of correctly following the manufacturers instructions and the local authority guidelines. There would be an opportunity to read and obtain information when learners: Read manufacturers instructions. There would be an opportunity to read and summerise information if the learners: Read some manufacturers instructions and summarises the main points relating to health & safety. There would be an opportunity to present IT information if the learner: Designs their own instructions, which includes an image, for a product or piece of equipment related to health & safety.3.7 Uses IT to draw a plan of the salon. There will be an opportunity to carryout calculations when the learner:.3.5 Draws a scale plan of the salon showing escape routes.3.5 Uses the measurements from the plan to work out the area of the salon. 15 There would be an opportunity for more extensive calculations to be completed if in activity.3.5, the learner: Draw a scale plan of the salon showing escape routes if the floor plan is not a simple rectangle Uses the measurements from the plan to work out the area of the salon if the calculation requires at least two stages Converts the measurements from metric to imperial measurements Changes the size of the drawing from one scale to another.
