Experienced in Engagement Non-profit Library Cooperative Devoted to serving the library community Internationally known and trusted Committed to cooperative information management
Concerned for Research Needs Convenience and Compliance: Case Studies on Persistent Identifiers in European Research Information Management - Joint research project with LIBER - in three different national settings: Finland, Germany and The Netherlands
Key findings External reporting requirements appeared as the strongest driver of Current Research Information System (CRIS) adoption and usage. A central component of research information management practice at all of the institutions studied was the collection of a university bibliography: the publications metadata representing the scholarly output of the institution.
Key findings Local institutional needs are also drivers of CRIS adoption and RIM practice. Institutions particularly sought information to support internal reporting and decision support activities, such as support for strategic planning, analysis of research activities, identification of institutional participation in specific programs or collaborations, and collection and analysis of a broad array of research outputs, not just publications.
Key findings Stakeholders are eager to improve workflow efficiencies and see potential for persistent identifiers, in particular person (author or researcher) identifiers, to support this need. Adoption of persistent person identifiers to support name disambiguation and improved publications metadata harvesting is underway in all three national environments
Key findings Libraries are a fairly new but increasingly important partner in this space, with responsibilities in publication management and user support, particularly as CRIS systems are increasingly used to monitor, track, and report on open-access activities.
Concerned for Research Needs The Realities of Research Data Management University of Edinburgh (UK) University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (US) Monash University (Australia) Wageningen University & Research (the Netherlands)
Concerned for Research Needs Incentives for Building University RDM Services Evolving Scholarly Norms Institutional Strategy Researcher Demand Compliance with policy mandates
Key findings Researcher demand and compliance with policy mandates were important factors in re-shaping and sustaining the RDM service bundle over time, but were not the key drivers for establishing RDM services in the case study institutions.
Key findings Incentives related to institutional strategy and evolving scholarly norms played a larger role in directly catalyzing RDM service development at these institutions. The development of local RDM capacity is invariably motivated by an interest in protecting or enhancing institutional reputation and success.
