1 Career Start Program AAS Degrees To view a 10-minute video that explains the importance of a program like Career Start, log on to Option A: With this option, students must complete all their home high school graduation requirements including passing all district and state testing requirements and completing a 13 th year plan/senior project. The student s home high school would be listed on their high school diploma and they would be eligible to walk in their high school graduation. If you have not completed all of your classes for your AAS degree upon receiving your high school diploma, you will be eligible to apply for financial aid to complete your College degree. Option B: With this option, the high school diploma would be granted through Highline College. Students would focus solely on the AAS requirements and would receive their high school diploma upon completion of the AAS degree. Students would be eligible to walk in the Highline College graduation ceremony. Any credits that are remaining on your AAS degree after you have exhausted your running start funding, would be the financial responsibility of the student. Accounting: Accounting clerks maintain financial records for businesses and organizations. They make many calculations every day, increasingly utilizing computers to calculate and record data. They need to have good communication skills, a strong aptitude for numbers, comfortable working with computers, and detailoriented. Administrative Management: Administrative managers plan work and supervise staff to make sure that offices run efficiently and smoothly. They must know the strengths and weaknesses of each staff member to assign work and to ensure that projects remain on schedule and meet the company s standards. They also act as a liaison between staff and management. Business: Business professionals can work in an array of industries in various roles, including management trainee, manager, marketing representative, or analyst. Specific job duties vary by role, but can include supervision of staff, implementation of new company procedures, or promotion of company products and services. Business Management and Support: Effectively manage and supervise people and projects in the office workplace. Utilizing office technology and critical thinking skills to address and support business needs. Represent the organization with professional written and oral communication skills. Chemical Dependency Professional: Chemical dependency professionals counsel people experiencing substance abuse. They help people identify behaviors and problems related to their addictions. Project Coordinators provide day-to-day administration of projects and ensure that the service or products are delivered in a timely, cost effective and qualitative manner. You should currently be working in or have supervisory/managerial skills gained in a commercial environment. The program will equip you with the tools and skills required in becoming a proficient Project Coordinator of I.T. projects. Interior Design: Interior designers plan the look of interior spaces in commercial and residential buildings and structures. They work with clients to find the right use of colors, textures, furniture, lighting and space that will meet the needs of the building s occupants. International Business and Trade: This program teaches you how to apply trade and logistics procedures and processes within companies that specialize in cargo transportation and import/export services. Specific roles can vary depending on the position, but international business and trade professionals may help with strategic business planning, merchandise tracking, financial management, and sales and business development. Medical Assisting: Medical assistants help keep health care facilities and offices running smoothly by performing many administrative and clinical duties. They update and file patients medical records and fill out insurance information, as well as arrange hospital admissions and laboratory services. They prepare patients by taking medical histories and recording vital signs, and sometimes assisting doctors during exams. Mobile Technology Expert Building mobile apps, architecting mobile strategies, and securing those devices are the top concerns facing the enterprises today. 4 Paraeducator: Paraeducators give personalized attention to students who need some extra help with class lessons and assist teachers. They work with students one-on-one or in small groups. They may also grade tests and assignment and check homework. Paraeducators also provide support for students with special needs. They mostly work in schools, but may also work in preschools, child care centers and community centers. Technical Communication This program will equip students to be exposed to creating good quality content needed by the likes of /for technical staff as well as end users. Numerous job areas with such skill set would be technical documentation, specifications writer, user documentation, marketing and sales literature, learning and training materials, and technical editor. In order to carry out these tasks students should be knowledgeable in numerous technical aspects of I.T. technical tools coupled with communication and writing skills. Jobs with these skillsets will fall under Technical Author, Technical Writer. Visual Communications: People who work in visual communications, typically graphic designers and Web designers, try to find the most effective way to get messages across in print, media and on the Web. They
5 create the layout and look of print publications, Webpages, multimedia projects, and marketing materials using colors, type, illustrations, photos and other visual elements for each piece. Web/Database Developer: Web/Database Developers design and build secure, professional data-driven websites. Data-driven websites interact with databases. For example, when you check your grades online or order a product through an e-commerce site, you are interacting with a data-driven website.
