8 LABOUR MARKET RESEARCH There are several ways of getting valuable information regarding employment opportunities. Information is available online through Service Canada and Employment Ontario. They offer several internet services that provide a variety of labour market information. Labour Market Information includes job postings for positions similar to the training you are requesting. Job Postings can be found on boards at employment organizations, on a variety of websites, etc. Service Canada: Has a variety of services to assist with Government of Canada Labour Market Information This site will answer your questions about jobs, skills and the availability of workers in local areas across Canada. Build Your Occupational Profile Job Descriptions Job and Skill Requirements Employment Prospects Wages & Salaries Potential Employers Where to Get Training About the Local Labour Market Industrial Profiles Other Resources Employment Ontario The Ontario Government provides labour market information to help individuals and businesses make informed decisions about careers, education, employment, and business plans. Labour market information provides valuable insights into labour market conditions and trends in Ontario, as well as in specific regions or communities in the province. Labour market information helps individuals determine which occupations suit their aptitudes and interests, where the jobs are, and which occupations have the best prospects. It also helps people locate the most appropriate training and educational resources. Employers benefit from a range of labour market information such as salary surveys, demographic trends, industry statistics and information on workplace innovation for developing business plans and human resource strategies, and for making investment and location decisions. Ontario Labour Market Information Guide Labour market information (LMI) is information concerning the conditions in, and the operations of, the market for labour. The labour market - like other markets - can be described in terms of supply and demand components. The supply side primarily refers to the number of potential workers and their characteristics whereas the demand side refers to employers' staffing requirements. In the labour market, labour services are exchanged and it is the interaction of the workers and firms that determines, in part, the price of labour, the number of workers employed, 8
9 and the working conditions attached to employment such as the work schedule and specific duties. This Guide is designed to make the important world of LMI more understandable and accessible. In particular, it: Describes how labour markets work; Presents key labour market definitions and calculations; Provides a brief background on interpreting labour market statistics; Discusses some key LMI data sources; and Highlights the major classification systems used in Canada for organizing employment data by occupation and industry. This Guide should be particularly useful to: job seekers, students, guidance counselors, corporate trainers, human resource professionals, community agencies, and Local Boards of Ontario. Ontario Job Futures is a publication which provides information on the current trends and future outlook for 190 occupations common to Ontario. It is a joint effort of the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities and of Service Canada - Ontario Region. Find an Occupation. Search for an occupational profile by name, NOC number or its related Job Family of similar occupations or from an alphabetically sorted list. What is a Job Profile? Each profile covers the following information: description, main duties, education/training, employment prospects, occupational characteristics, and a selected listing of web sites for more information. Employment Patterns. Understanding the labour market is an important step toward making "informed" choices. This overview provides background information on industry and occupational employment trends in Ontario, and the key factors that determine industry and occupational employment patterns over time. How are Jobs Defined? The goal of a classification system is to group similar occupations together in a manner that clearly highlights the distinctiveness of that group. The National Occupational Classification system, or NOC, does exactly this by grouping occupations according to their skill level and skill type. Job Posting can be found on these websites: MNO Job Bank - Aboriginal Job Centre - Federal Government Careers - Provincial Government Careers - Workopolis ew&lang=en 9
