7 Strategy: Create winning teams and project a positive image Objective Responsible Parties Start Date Goal Outcomes Expected Participation Win 3 Mid-American Conference championships each year (divisional, overall or tournament). Athletics Department Each sport will have the MAC championship as a goal each year. Head coaches, administration and student-athletes. Increase earned points in the Reese and Jacoby Cups as a department. (Points are awarded based on each school s finish, with the overall total divided by the number of sports sponsored by each school. An institution may count either indoor track and field or outdoor track and field but not both.) Athletics Department Finish in the top half in both standings 4 of every 5 years. Finish in the top 1/3 in both standings 2 of every 5 years. Win each trophy once every 5 years. Develop greater awareness of what each other is doing while improving the unity of the department. Develop greater ownership in each program improving our overall standing. Head coaches, administration and student-athletes. Conduct annual preseason meetings between the Athletics Director and each Head Coach to develop individual program goals and expectations. Ensure that each head coach is on the same page with individual program expectations and communicates to the Athletic Director. Create greater ownership and understanding for where each program fits into the strategic plan. Head coaches, administration and student-athletes.
8 Strategy: Strengthen collaborative effort between athletic department and academic support units. Especially with regards to progress towards degree. Another staff member or the very least a shift in responsibilities to help academic services with monitoring towards degree. A change in structure so advisors are assigned based on major. Academic Success strategic planning group Create a guide for studentathletes on protocols for seeking academic advice and academic support. Create a permanent athletics success committee that would address issues dealing with student-athletes, coaches, faculty and administration. Have a real-time, accessible forum of peers for coaches and studentathletes to bring forth issues and problems they may have with athletic success. A fail safe mechanism (guide) will be created to be available when a personal source is not convenient. This study guide assists student-athletes to ensure they are on track and eligible To have a group of people that our coaches and student athletes know and trust to have the same goals as members of the athletic department. Senior staff March 2010 First, get all levels of the department more informed of issues and decisions affecting their workplace. Second, establish a morale committee to improve communication. Monthly activities instituted by the moral committee such as pregame and tailgating events and monthly birthdays. 12 Strategy: Offer comprehensive preparation for life through all experiences academically, athletically & socially. Objective Responsible Parties Start Date Goal Outcomes Expected Participation Communicate with student-athletes and not at them. Schedule round table sessions once a month that provide student-athletes the opportunity to talk with coaches and administration about life experiences and topics of interest. Members of the studentathlete experience group, assistance from internal alignment group and the team captains of both. September 2010 Make our students aware of the resources that are available to them. Build camaraderie among the teams and with the coaches and athletic department staff. 4-5 coaches and/or administrative staff at each round table and any interested studentathletes. Build camaraderie. Create more support from athletes at their fellow student-athlete s home events. Student-athletes Student-athlete experience committee The hope is that this will be a by-product of the round table sessions. Teams will make a greater effort to attend each other s home events. Teams will gain a better understanding and appreciation of what their fellow athletic teams go through. They can all provide support to each other. All athletic teams and Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. Revamp student-athlete exit interviews. Review current mid-year survey and written exit interviews. Members of the exit interview subcommittee formed from the studentathlete experience committee April 2010 Make sure our questions are capturing answers that will help Athletics measure the effectiveness of our efforts for accomplishing the Goal/CSF. The coaches and athletic department will have a better understanding of what student-athletes want/need. All student-athletes.
13 Evaluation of the Strategic Plan for the Department of Athletics This is a living plan. The team captains for each critical success factor will evaluate monthly to track the progress. The strategic plan is also an implementation tool, giving us a step by step roadmap to implement the strategies, tactics and tools.
