2 Revision OBJECTIVES: Objectives: Upon completion of this presentation, the participant will be able to: 1. Identify the two types of transport of broth or culture isolates to NPHL 2. Using classification guidelines for transport of hazardous pathogens to NPHL, choose appropriate packaging materials of transport for Category A and B. 3. Depending on location, select which of the two transport types to ship to NPHL. 4. Complete appropriate paperwork required for the type of transport used. 5. Confirm package is appropriately packaged and shipped according to the federal regulation of DOT to insure the package arrives at its destination intact. 6. Know who to contact for questions. 2
3 Why are these revisions Important? It s the law! To keep current with 49 CFR part To comply with Nebraska Title 173 Safety in case of leakage in transport, proper labels and documentation provide information that can be used for safe and effective cleanup. Failure to comply in all respects may be in breach, subject to legal penalties 3
4 Patient Specimens Defined as material collected directly from human and transported for diagnosis, disease treatment or prevention Includes excreta, secreta, blood & its components, tissue and tissue swabs, body parts, specimens in transport media Transwabs Blood culture bottles prior to growth Culture plates prior to growth 4
5 Patient Specimens No Changes to processing & shipping via NPHL courier All patient specimens including preserved stools for Shiga Toxin positive E.coli can be shipped normally in biohazard bag and placed in courier cooler Does NOT require special NPHL Shipper 5
