When selecting an asset tracking technology bar code labels and nameplates vs. radio frequency identification (RFID) tags there are several factors to consider in order to maximize performance. For example, consider the material composition of the item being tracked. Passive ultra high frequency (UHF) RFID has limitations when attached to metal or assets containing liquid. Metal surfaces reflect RF and liquids absorb RF both affecting readability. The contour of a surface is another factor. Unlike RFID, bar code tags and labels can conform to curved surfaces. Environmental factors are also key. Heat, UV exposure, abrasion and chemicals may impair RFID while bar code tags and labels can be designed to resist harsh environments. After reading this information you might think RFID may not be the answer. However, there are numerous benefits to using RFID as your tracking technology. First, RFID allows users the ability to read multiple items in a short period of time unlike single-scan bar codes. Second, line-of-sight isn t needed when reading an RFID tag as it is when scanning a bar code. Third, depending on the type of inlay and readers used, RFID tags can have a much longer read range than bar code. So, bar code or RFID? Why not use both? With only a minimal additional investment for a bar code, using both technologies will allow locations that cannot support RFID infrastructure to use the data simply by integrating the bar code information into the inlay.
