REQUIREMENT (U) APA 19a. Ice Making Capability The FPE shall include an add-on ice making capability that automatically dispenses and seals in 10 lbs bags a minimum of 3,600 pounds of ice per day (T) 7,200 pounds or more of ice per day (O) (U) APA 19b. Ice Making Capability Shall meet facility, procedural, and quality standards, and be able to pass the Veterinary and Preventive Medicine inspection requirements for potable ice (T/O). Page 18, Capability Production Document For Force Provider Expeditionary (FPE), approved 27 Feb 14 3
CONTAINERIZED ICE MAKING SYSTEM (CIMS) PM Force Sustainment Systems Operational Capability Demonstrations conducted At Aberdeen Proving Grounds and Fort Devens March Oct
CONTAINERIZED ICE MAKING SYSTEM (CIMS) Aberdeen Proving Ground Tested, Ft Devens Demonstration Successfully Executed The fully automated Containerized Ice Making System (CIMS) provides food-grade ice and minimizes operator interface One operator connects the system to a potable water source and power (< 60 minutes) At just 5,600 lbs, the system provides the flexibility to support multiple base camp, field medical, humanitarian aid, and other remote site scenarios Transportable by five-ton and larger trucks; moveable with standard material handling equipment (MHE) Requires a 208/230 VAC, 3 phase, 60Hz power source (generator) Operates from any potable water source ROWPU, purified water system, water tank/tank truck CIMS supports military base camps, field hospitals, humanitarian aid/disaster relief, and other remote sites such as mining and construction sites 5
CONTAINERIZED ICE MAKING SYSTEM (CIMS) CIMS is a rugged completely selfcontained (no exterior housing required) TRICON based containerized ice making system that produces 1,800 lbs of ice per day at 130 F ambient temperature Three units can fit within ISO footprint to achieve 5,400 lbs/day All Components Internally Mounted Location & capacity flexibility Reduces or eliminates the need for contracted ice Eliminates transportation & logistics Energy efficiency: reduced carbon footprint from the reduction in vehicles deployed for ice delivery Eliminates requirement for ice plant construction for certain deployments Reduces risks to delivery vehicles & convoys in hostile environments Ready platform for disaster response 6
CONTAINERIZED ICE MAKING SYSTEM (CIMS) Operational Capabilities Uses Standard MHE, water source and power 1800 Lbs per day as standard configured ISO Provides multiple locations in TRICON configuration Makes the ice, bags the ice, seals the bags, and stores up to 60 ten-pound bags of ice Applications Department of Defense o Army Force Provider Feeding and Medical o Military field hospitals Commercial o Mining operations o Remote Industrial o Humanitarian Aid CIMS supports military base camps, field hospitals, humanitarian aid/disaster relief, and other remote sites such as mining and construction sites 7
RECENT ARMY TESTING Successful Performance Testing at APG - April 15, 2014 Results - Only Unit that demonstrated Sustained Ice Production at extreme temperatures CIMS produced an average of 8-10 bags of ice per hour when operating. The system experienced multiple bagger grab bag sensor errors each day (about every 4-6 hours of operation) that interrupted ice production until the bagger was reset (cycled off then on) Overall CIMS produced ~1800 lbs of bagged ice per day for the 3 day test with no variation due to exterior temperature. All bags weighed in within 1% of the anticipated 10 lb weight. System operated for over 20 hours each day. Successful Usage Testing at Fort Devens Aug-Oct 2014 Results - Successful Ice Production Operations CIMS had a startup issue with the bagger mechanism that required technician interface Once corrected the unit was operated on a weekly basis being started and stopped by PM FSS contracted personnel and multiple demonstrations were executed Led directly to PM FSS ordering 1 unit (with improvements) 8
SYSTEM IMPROVEMENTS US Army has procured 1 unit Currently in Test at DRS for 12/17/15 delivery Provide an Auxiliary pump to allow for use of static water source Re-sequence start-up logic to reduce peak power requirements Provide a ruggedized graphical User Interface (GUI) control, with black out mode capability Optimize container design, using purpose-built walls to increase the thermal efficiency Conduct formal Shock and vibration analysis to assure off-road transportability Mange all waste water streams to a single outlet. Provide for distribution to a gray water reservoir if required. Incorporate design modifications to resist effects of blowing sand Incorporate light bar that indicates when Merchandiser needs attendance Assure all piping, connections and fittings meet ruggedization requirements similar to Multitemperature Refrigerated Container System (MTRCS) Incorporate a ground stud at the power panel. Include gauges for the minimum required water flow and pressure before the system will operate. NEW BAGGER development completed by third party (Frost Engineering) to provide a more reliable, hands off operation of the system that is food processing certifiable Incorporate wash down access to all ice making components PM FSS IPT partisapation driving the improvements for this deplorable TRL 9 CIMS for 2016 PM FSS procurement 9
