2 Study Highlights Data are presented in pounds, with historical data provided for 1989, 1993 and 1998, and forecasts provided for 2003 and US Demand Demand for thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs) in the US is forecast to increase 6.7 percent per year to 1.4 billion pounds in the year 2003, significantly outpacing gains in the general economy. Motor vehicles will continue to be the largest outlet for TPEs, with gains based on efforts to reduce weight and consolidate components, as well as the recyclability of thermoplastic elastomer parts. The most rapid annual gains will arise in the smaller medical products market, where environmental concerns involving plasticizers and potential allergies to latex are promoting greater use of thermoplastic elastomers in blood bags, stoppers and closures, and hoses and tubing. Styrenic block copolymers are the largest product segment, accounting for 44 percent of total demand in Among the remaining major types of thermoplastic elastomers, the strongest gains will be achieved by thermoplastic vulcanizate elastomers due to the continued popularity of adding soft-touch feel to various products, such as those found in the consumer product and motor vehicle markets. Industry Structure and Participants The US thermoplastic elastomer industry encompasses over 50 companies, with the top five suppliers -- Royal Dutch/Shell Group (Netherlands), DuPont, Advanced Elastomer Systems, BF Goodrich and Dow Chemical -- accounting for over 45 percent of total sales in The thermoplastic elastomer industry is dominated by multinational chemical companies that typically also maintain extensive TPE feedstock and synthetic rubber activities. Other participants include joint ventures that concentrate on one TPE product category (such as Advanced Elastomer Systems in TPVs and Dexco Polymers in SBCs). In addition, independent compounders offer a range of TPE products. Freedonia Industry Study 2

6 Market Environment The Market Environment Section discusses factors influencing thermoplastic elastomer demand, including manufacturing trends and the outlook for the rubber industry. This information provides you with an understanding and an analysis of the climate in which the thermoplastic elastomers industry operates. MARKET ENVIRONMENT Competitive Materials There are three major materials which compete with thermoplastic elastomers: rubber, plastic and metal. Most traditional applications for thermoplastic elastomers have come at the expense of rubber, either by directly replacing rubber parts, or by taking new applications that would have gone to rubber. Thermoplastic elastomers are selected over thermoset rubber for a variety of reasons, including recyclability, easy processability, low density (giving the end user more product per pound) and shorter cycle times. SAMPLE PAGE Although TPEs hold several advantages over thermoset rubber, there are several reasons why thermoplastic elastomers will not completely eliminate the need for rubber. TPEs can not be used in all rubber applications. For example, TPEs lack the deformation resistance and compression set for use in tires, which excludes their use in a market that consumes roughly two-thirds of all rubber. In addition, TPEs incorporate rubber into their composition. As such, rubber demand is not necessarily diminished by competition from thermoplastic elastomers. For example, the amount of ethylene-propylene diene monomer (EPDM) rubber incorporated into an engine gasket made from thermoplastic polyolefins or thermoplastic vulcanizates may be as high as 50 to 80 percent, while actual rubber monomer content in a filled EPDM gasket may be as low as 30 percent due to the use of fillers and reinforcements. For this reason, many synthetic rubber suppliers have integrated into the supply of thermoplastic elastomers or have developed strong relationships with TPE compounders. As technological improvements continue to develop, thermoplastic elastomers will increasingly be in direct competition with plastics, such as nylon, polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride and acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene. Thermoplastic elastomers will be selected over plastics due to their durability, recyclability, flexibility and 6 Freedonia Industry Study

7 Products The Product Sections provide demand for historical years and forecast growth to 2003 and THERMOPLASTIC VULCANIZATES Products discussed include: Styrenic Block Copolymers Thermoplastic Polyolefin Elastomers Thermoplastic Polyurethane Elastomers Thermoplastic Vulcanizates Copolyester Elastomers Other Thermoplastic Elastomers This information helps you: Analyze your company's growth potential in the industry. Outline your strategic plans for five and ten years out. Establish sales goals. General Demand for thermoplastic vulcanizate elastomers (TPVs) in the US is forecast to increase at double-digit annual rates to reach 146 million pounds in 2003, exceeding average growth in the thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) industry. Although surpassing average growth, gains in TPV demand will decelerate from rates established over the prior decade due to a slowing in durable goods shipments, where most TPVs are consumed. Continued growth in this product category will be primarily attributable to developing applications in the motor vehicle and consumer product markets. In addition, TPVs are commonly used in the industrial product, wire and cable, construction, medical product, and aerospace and other transportation equipment markets. The US will continue to have a trade surplus in TPVs, reaching 1104 million pounds in 2003 with production expanding 9.3 percent per year to reach 250 million pounds during Styrenic Block Copolymer Demand by Application (million pounds) the same time period. In 1998, thermoplastic vulcanizate elastomers accounted for nine percent of total thermoplastic elastomer demand. 8 Markets The Markets Section analyzes trends and considers the threats and opportunities in each of the major markets for thermoplastic elastomers. The information presented will help you: Focus your sales and marketing efforts on high growth areas. Propose new areas for development. Thermoplastic Elastomer Demand in Construction Demand for thermoplastic elastomers in the construction market is forecast to increase 6.3 percent per year to 209 million pounds in 2003, outpacing growth in construction expenditures during the same time period. Overall, styrenic block copolymers dominate demand in the construction market, with uses encompassing paving, roofing and adhesive materials. Copolyester elastomers, thermoplastic polyolefins and thermoplastic vulcanizates account for the remaining portion of demand in the construction market. MARKETS Gains will primarily be attributable to healthy spending dedicated to highway and street construction, where styrenic block copolymers are generally used as asphalt modifiers. Other polymers in this segment include rubber latex. Elastomers impart a strength when added to the asphalt and get stronger when pulled out of shape, and their use results in a more resilient, flexible pavement. In addition to elastomers, plastomers can be used to modify asphalt. Plastomeric polymers include ethylene copolymers, polyolefin and polyethylene. Plastomers form a Motor Vehicle Markets for Thermoplastic Elastomers by Type & Application (million pounds) SAMPLE PAGE tough, rigid, three-dimensional network with strength to resist heavy loads, although they may crack when strained. They generally increase the stiffness of the pavement. Both elastomers and plastomers reduce the tendency of pavement to form ruts, while elastomers and polyethylene (among the plastomers) also Item reduce low-temperature cracking. 1998The results 2003 of any 2008 particular polymer modification depend not only on the type of polymer but also its concentration, chemical Motor Vehicle Production (000) composition 10875and molecular orientation, in addition to the crude oil source, lbs TPEs/vehicle refining 14.7 process and 19.3 grade of 26.2 the asphalt Motor Vehicle Markets for TPEs Lastly, gains 160will benefit 210 from 315 the increased 447popularity 634 of TPO-based roofing. Gains will primarily be at the expense of plastic and Thermoplastic Vulcanizates elastomeric roofing membranes in nonresidential and low-slope residential Styrenic Block Copolymers applications.
