3 Why GS1 DataBar? You ve seen the barcodes on stickers, what do they mean? 3

4 Why GS1 DataBar was introduced To bar code products that were too small to carry a barcode eg. Fresh produce using PLUs is seen as an early adopter. To provide a data carrier that enables more information to be encoded beyond a GTIN at POS eg. Weights, batch number, expiration date. 4

8 GS1 DataBar GTIN (Global Trade Item Number) only GS1 DataBar Bar Codes may be chosen for hard-to-mark, small products such as loose fruit & vegetables labels Fresh foods currently use a Price Look Up (PLU) code, which can now be identified with a GTIN encoded in a GS1 DataBar Bar Code. Safe-guarding retailer profitability at the self-checkout in stores GS1 DataBar will not replace EAN/UPC Bar Codes 8

12 What a Supplier should consider Which products will carry GS1 DataBar barcodes and when (collaboration with the retailer) When to redesign the artwork, are PLU labels big enough. Allow sufficient time. Schedule the redesign into the production process Reassess printing environment Who allocates and manages the barcode numbers Educate staff 12

13 How to get started? Step 1 Join GS1 Australia and obtain a GS1 Company Prefix. Step 2 Assign a GTIN for each Price-Look-Up (PLU) code which will uniquely identify the product as your own. Note: You should also retain the PLU code on the label, as some retailers may not yet have the capability to scan GS1 DataBar. Step 3 Provide GTINs and corresponding PLU codes to your trading partner so that they can enter these in their POS system.

15 What is a GTIN? Filler Zero Use a zero to fill for the 14 digit GTIN format GS1 Company Prefix The first seven, eight or nine digits are allocated by GS1 Australia to the member company Item Reference The next three, four or five digits are allocated to a specific product by the member company Check Digit Checks the validity of the entire number by a mathematical formula
