Permit to Fly MODIFICATION NO: MODIFICATION TITLE: Type Approval of the Rotorsport UK Ltd (RSUK) Cavalon Gyroplane fitted with an Ivoprop DL3-68 propeller and Approval for the Issue of a UK Permit to Fly 1. Introduction The RotorSport Cavalon Gyroplane was Type Approved under AAN29345, fitted with a three-blade HTC ground adjustable propeller as part of the Type Approved build standard. This AAN addendum (2) has been raised to record the Type Approval of the Rotorsport UK Cavalon gyroplane (Rotax 912UL and 914UL variants) fitted with an Ivoprop DL3-68 propeller. 2. Aircraft Build Standard The Cavalon is a two seat (side-by-side configuration) gyroplane powered by either a Rotax 914UL engine or a Rotax 912ULS engine The build standard of the Cavalon gyroplane is defined in Rotorsport UK Product Definition Document PDD-006, plus approved modifications The Ivoprop DL3-68 propeller is an electrically actuated, manually controlled variable pitch 3 blade propeller. The propeller is controlled by a manual panel mounted switch to change between fine and coarse pitch, indicated by LED lamps. There is no Constant Speed unit fitted. The Ivoprop DL3-68 propeller installation is the same as previously approved for the Calidus gyroplane under AAN29266 addendum 2.

Approval Procedures This aircraft approval has been carried out in accordance with BCAR Section A Chapter A2-5 (and by RotorSport UK Ltd under BCAR Chapter A8-21) Basis Of Approval CAA Approval Basis For The Aircraft The Cavalon was originally approved to BCAR Section T issue 4. For this propeller modification the applicant has elected to comply with BCAR issue 5 dated 9 th May This is accepted by the CAA on the basis that this is the same standard as approved for the same installation on the Calidus gyroplane under AAN CAA Design Requirements For Permit to Fly Any installed equipment for which the Air Navigation Order requires approval must be approved by the CAA. 4.3 Environmental Requirements No noise certification standards apply to gyroplanes. 4.4 Design Requirements Associated With Operational Approvals Not applicable Compliance With The Basis Of Approval Compliance With The Approval Basis For The Aircraft The applicant has submitted RotorSport Modification Approval MC-294, raised to cover the Ivoprop DL3-68 propeller installation (including flight testing) which has been reviewed and agreed with the CAA. Within that document RotorSport were satisfied that the stability, handling and performance characteristics were found to meet the requirements of BCAR Section T within the conditions tested. Equivalent Level Of Safety Items The document MC-294 referenced above contains the following equivalent level of safety to BCAR Section T requirements: There are two considered; BCAR Section T at issue 5 BCAR Section T at issue 5 introduces additional test factors in AMC material for the blade retention testing required under T1935, leading to a test load substantially higher than that instructed in earlier versions of the code. The blade assembly has been subjected to test which demonstrated integrity to a load level which is four times the calculated centrifugal load at maximum permissible rotational speed. While demonstrating a significant margin over normal operation, this level does not quite satisfy the AMC T1935 material. 2
3 The CAA has reviewed the requirements for propeller approval of assemblies containing composite blades in other codes, along with other special conditions developed for composite rotating components. As a result of this review, it is concluded that the load demonstrated by test in this instance is acceptable BCAR Section T issue 5 T1322 The cockpit indications for normal operation of the propeller at the limits of propeller pitch are steady amber lights. This has been reviewed by the CAA and considered acceptable. T23 Load Distribution Limits The original aircraft CG calculations contain provision for the inclusion of this propeller, and no changes are required. 5.2 Compliance With Design Requirements For Permit to Fly Not affected by this modification. 5.3 Compliance with Environmental Requirements No noise certification standards apply to gyroplanes. 5.4 Compliance with Design Requirements Associated With Operational Approvals Not applicable. 5.5 Required Manuals And Other Documents Including Mandatory Placards Flight Manual Cavalon Pilots Handbook, RSUK0287 Issue 2 or later approved revision. The manual has been amended to include operating instructions for the Ivoprop DL3-68 propeller option Placards Placards to be fitted are detailed in paragraph 2.9 of the Pilot Handbook. Additional engine limitations are introduced as a result of this modification. These are included in issue 2 of the Pilots Handbook and are marked on engine instrumentation or placarded in the cockpit. Placarding must include a warning that the aircraft is not certificated to an international standard Maintenance Manual Cavalon Maintenance Manual RSUK0288 Issue 4 and the associated maintenance schedules referenced within this manual or later approved revision: RSUK0325 issue 1 Ivoprop DL3-68 Propeller Maintenance Manual and the associated maintenance schedules referenced within this manual or later approved revision. 3
4 5.5.4 Weight and Balance Schedule. There is no change to the approved weight and balance schedule. See Pilot Handbook, referenced under section above, for permitted cockpit loads and for Weight and Balance Record Type Approval Data Sheet Type Approval Data Sheet, BG06 refers. 6. Conditions Affecting This Approval The original limitations applicable to Cavalon as identified under Section 6 of AAN29345 and subsequent addendums remain applicable. The following additional limitations apply to Cavalon gyroplanes fitted with an Ivoprop DL3-68 powered by a 914UL engine only; 6.1 Engine Limitations Max manifold pressure Max. continuous manifold pressure 39.9 in Hg 35.4 in Hg 7. Continued Airworthiness See Sections and above regarding the Pilots Handbook and Maintenance Manual. 8. Survey No survey of this modification is required. 9. Flight Test A flight test has been carried out by the Approved Organisation, and a report supplied ref FTR-325, 357, 339, summarised in MC-294. Tests were carried out to represent aircraft performance with conditions simulated for both engine options. The flight test reports have been accepted. 10. Issue of a Permit to Fly The following actions must be completed prior to the issue of a Permit to Fly; a) All actions and ground test procedures specified by the aircraft manufacturer must be completed satisfactorily b) It must be verified that the documents or amendments to documents, and the placards defined under Section 5.5 above are as specified. 4

Approval Subject to the conditions of Section 6 above, RotorSport modification MC-294 is approved for embodiment on any Cavalon Type Approved gyroplane, provided that it conforms with the content of this AAN, and is operated in accordance with the Flight Manual and the Permit to Fly....
