After early tests at MIRA it was progressively adopted as the benchmark system for use in UK multistorey car parks. Over the last 30 years standards and authoritative recommendations have advanced considerably and the solutions offered by Berry Systems have matched, and in many cases, have exceeded these requirements. The product range has grown to cover a wide array of industrial and commercial situations. Products have been designed to protect plant and people from accidents with fork lift trucks, pallet trucks, trolleys etc as well as cars, vans and HGVs. All products are independently tested to meet the relevant requirements of BS6399 and BS6180. In addition, Heavy Duty designs are available for up to 40 tonne vehicle impact. Industrial vehicles cause millions of pounds of damage every year to plant and machinery. Tragically, many accidents involve injury to people as well, much of which could have been avoided. 3 Advantages of Flexible Barrier Systems The force of an impact will be absorbed by the object doing the hitting and the object being hit. The common theme employed by most products in the Berry Systems range is the concept that, if this force can be channelled into and absorbed by a safety barrier then less damage will be done to the objects involved, be they vehicles, machines, buildings or people. This means that safety barriers must be more than just visible reminders of potential danger. They must be engineered to withstand the likely specific danger in any given situation. For very light impacts the inherent strength of a steel barrier, rigidly mounted can be sufficient to withstand the impact without suffering damage. However, this is achieved at the expense of transferring most of the impacting force between the object that hit the barrier - a fork lift truck for example - and the floor anchorage. Stronger impacts will damage both the barrier and floor, always involving costly repairs. A semi-flexible mounting system, such as the Berry Flexi-Post can absorb more energy from the impact by deflecting up to 120mm. This deflection protects both the barrier and the impacting object. This is sufficient, for example, to absorb over half of the force involved when a 1.5 tonne car hits a barrier at 10mph (4.5 metres/sec). The Berry Spring Steel Buffa system can also be used. The mounting posts, as the name suggests, are made from a grade of spring steel that has enormous flexible qualities. A Spring Steel Buffa system can typically deflect between 300mm and 400mm and in the process absorb approximately 75% of the force involved in the example of the 1.5 tonne car at 10mph. Protection levels Many of the products in this catalogue are assessed by the level of protection they give relative to the danger or threat likely in the given circumstances. These are indicated by the use of Bronze, Silver and Gold icons. However, it is important to take these symbols as guides only to the relative merits of each system and that a system that may earn a gold icon in a pedestrian area may only give a bronze level of protection in an area with heavy goods vehicles. 4 Service Yards & Loading Bays With higher traffic flows - often at higher speeds - service yards and loading bays are among the most dangerous areas of an industrial or commercial site. The Berry Spring Steel Buffa range of products has been independently tested for vehicles ranging from 1.5 tonnes to 40 tonnes impacting at up to 10mph (4.5 metres/sec). As a basic rule, any barrier dealing with Heavy Goods Vehicles should be at least 760mm high from ground level (900mm if dealing with reversing trucks) and with post centres no more than 1600mm apart. Single Height Barriers Exterior Rigid Berry Barrier The exterior version of the Rigid Berry barrier is 760mm high and is designed to absorb less severe impact on a regular basis. On impact, the loading is transferred to the footings. The posts are available in bolt down or cast-in versions. Exterior Spring Steel Buffa Ideal for absorbing impacts from cars and light commercial vehicles at speeds up to 10mph. The barrier will deflect between 300mm and 400mm reducing damage to both the barrier and the vehicle. This deflection is contained mainly within its own footprint. Exterior Rigid Berry Barrier Flexi-Post Berry Barrier The Flexi-Post Berry Barrier system is uniquely engineered to be able to withstand regular heavy impact of up to 10 tonnes. This is done through the rubber shock absorbers positioned within the post socket. This offers a perfect solution to prevent damage when using conventional barrier rail and is suitable to protect all areas of a service yard including storage tanks, buildings and substations. Handrails can be added as required. Heavy Duty Buffa The Heavy Duty Buffa can absorb the impact of a 40 tonne vehicle travelling at 10mph (glancing blow impact). It is ideal for all service yards and access roads used by HGVs. The Spring Steel Buffa System, combined with a handrail (where needed) is the ideal solution. It is designed to be a space saving, easy to install (1 Anchor Bolt) barrier that has the strength to take regular glancing blow impacts from Fork Lift Trucks. 8 Cladding and Wall Protection Having built an expensive warehouse, the last thing you need is damage to the structure. Walls and expensive cladding need to be protected from fork lift trucks and other pallet movers, with special consideration also needed for potential fork penetration of any barrier. Berry Systems offer a full range of solutions that counter these problems. These are bespoke systems to cater for each situation and budget, while still offering the relevant protection required. Light Duty The following are best used when defending against lighter weight pallet movers at low speeds. Feet can be turned either way to suit (please advise when ordering). 9 Heavy Duty These systems are designed for heavier frequent impact internally from either a glancing or a head-on blow at low speeds. There are 3 categories Rigid Solutions, Flexible Solutions and Flexi-Post (Semi-Rigid). Interior Rigid Berry Barrier 610mm or 760mm high as standard, this rigid system is designed to absorb less severe impact on a regular basis. On impact, the loading is transferred through the fixing bolts to the concrete floor. These are available in a bolt down or cast-in version. Interior Rigid Berry Barrier Warehouse Buffa Warehouse Buffa By mounting the barrier rail at ground level, forks cannot slide beneath the barrier. Ideal where raised forks are not a problem. Damage repairs can be costly and in the worst cases can affect the structural integrity of the building with far reaching consequences. 13 Pedestrian Walkways Berry Handrail With heavy duty options as well as traditional ball type systems, Berry Handrails provide solutions to suit all walkways. They are easy to install and made of lightweight components which delineate a safe and easy route to emergency exits or to avoid dangerous machinery or traffic areas. This system conforms to BS6180. Available with Mesh Infill on request. Spring Steel Buffa and Handrail A combined Barrier and Handrail system is required where there is factory stock or traffic movement that could impede people using walkways, particularly en route to emergency exits. Escape routes must be kept clear and that includes trip hazards. Berry s combined solution eliminates this issue. It uses all the properties of the Spring Steel Buffa but with the L Shape leg and the barrier turned so that it is facing away from the escape route. An extension piece is added up to the required height of 1100mm for the handrail. Mesh can be added to the upper or lower sections if required. As an operator of a building, the owners are under obligation to provide a safe environment for any car park areas available for their employees and visitors. There is one main safety standard that deals with car park protection, BS6399. Berry Systems products are designed to comply with this standard. Ornamental Bollards These are primarily for use as a deterrent to unauthorised intrusion into your premises but are stylishly designed to fit in with the local environment. 16 Access Control It is often necessary to restrict access to parts of an industrial site. This may just be a case of keeping goods vehicles out of car parks or the protection of a warehouse entrance from over-height vehicles. The Berry Systems range of access control products includes height restrictors, manual arm barriers, exterior fencing and gates. Berry Goalpost Height Restrictors One of the most cost effective ways to prevent unauthorized vehicles from entering the Car Park area. Made to order to suit your site with a maximum width of 6 metres. Various designs and sizes available. They provide a good visual height warning as well as representing a physical barrier. Manual Arm Barriers and Swing Gates Both are available as a manual method of entry to site that can be locked to prevent access when required. Various sizes and designs are available. Fencing & Gates Berry Systems can supply and install your perimeter fencing requirements as part of a bigger package. 17 Shelters & Cycle Racks To supplement our main range, Berry Systems also offers a range of other items often required on busy sites. These also supplement the Health and Safety guidelines in many areas. Cycle Racks A range of cycle racks are offered to suit both small and larger sites. These are floor mounted as standard and can be powder coated if required. Type N Stands can accommodate one or two bicycles (one each side). The user can lock the frame and wheels to the stand by their own chains, padlocks, cables or D-locks. Available ragged for casting in or flanged for bolting down. When positioned adjacent to one another stands should be around 800mm apart and around 450mm from any wall or other obstruction. Available in brushed stainless steel. Grade 304 available as standard, grade 316 is available to order.
