Introducing the 3M Intelligent Return and Sorter System The 3M Intelligent Return and Sorter System is a complete check-in and sorting system that is both affordable and reliable. It helps libraries increase automated check-in and circulation and maintain a more accurate catalog, while improving productivity and customer service. 2812_V2_SL_3_bin_ISO B 3M, All rights reserved. 6
System modules Note: One 3M Intelligent Return or Staff Induction Unit is required per installation and a maximum of four are supported, which can include any combination of 3M Intelligent Return Units and Staff Induction Units. 3M Intelligent Return Classic The 3M Intelligent Return Classic Model 2810 and Model 2812 provide the interface between patrons checking in items and the sorting operation. These units are installed through the wall that separates patron-accessible areas from a staff area, where sorting occurs. They provide a simple, intuitive push button interface. The following table lists differences between Models 2810 and Model Installation Type Item-return door Return shelf type 2810 Interior wall None / open Extends from wall 2812 Exterior wall Automated Flush with wall 3M Intelligent Return Staff Model 2830 The Model 2830 enables staff to check in materials from the back office B 3M, All rights reserved. 7
3M Sorter System SL Model 2840 The 3M Sorter System SL (Model 2840) is an optional unit enabling 3- way sorting of returned Items. 2840_iso B 3M, All rights reserved. 8
Bin Model 2899 The Model 2899 bin is a four-wheel sort bin, equipped with a canvas liner and spring-loaded platform that automatically adjusts in height as it fills and empties. It has a capacity of 175 to 250 items. Premium metal bin The premium steel bin features a rugged, welded metal design, a spring loaded laminate platform that lifts items higher for improved ergonomics, an elevated handle for improved maneuverability, and an approximate capacity of 330 items. 10 Implementation responsibilities This section lists tasks required to implement a system and identifies the party responsible for completing each task 1. The library contacts 3M Technical Service ( ) (website: or the 3M sales representative to ensure that it has the most recent version of this document. 2. The library and the 3M sales representative complete a Site Checklist and submit it to 3M. 3. The sales representative provides a System Layout Plan to the library. 4. The library prepares the site for the system, which includes addressing the following: Installing electrical service according to the requirements listed in Electrical requirements on page 11 Ensuring compliance with the environmental requirements listed in Environmental requirements on page 12 Installing a network connection in compliance with Network requirements on page 12 Preparing a wall for system installation as described in Wall construction: Models 2810 and 2812 on page 16 Providing sufficient space for the system as listed in Minimum distances to walls and obstructions on page 20 Providing suitable hallways and doorways from the staging area to the installation area to move system components, which is described in Minimum access requirements on page 19 Installing the surround (U.S.) as described in Install the surround on page 21 Insulating around the surround of outdoor units as described in Insulate the surround of outdoor units on page The 3M technician inspects the site to verify readiness for installation. 6. The 3M technician installs the system. 7. The library completes wall finishing, such as touch-up repair of minor surface damage, drywall taping and sanding, paint or wallpaper, baseboard, etc., after system installation is complete B 3M, All rights reserved. 10

Wall construction: Models 2810 and 2812 This section provides wall construction requirements for 3M Intelligent Return Classic units. Before beginning new construction or changing an existing structure, contact 3M Library Systems Technical Service at (website: or your sales representative to: Confirm that you have the most recent version of this document. Verify that the proposed system can be installed in the planned space. Front elevation The 2810/2812 requires a wall opening 28 inches wide 21.5 inches high [711 mm 546 mm]. The surround adds a 3 in. (760 mm) border around the opening. The wall opening requires framing material that will readily accept the surround anchor screws, which cannot be concrete, brick, or rock of any kind. 3M recommends 2 x 6 inch treated wood framing. The system can be installed in walls with depths that range from 4 in. (102 mm) to 18 in. (457 mm). 3M requires that the bottom of the wall opening be 33 in. (838 mm) from the floor on the staff side of the wall. If the staff and patron sides of the wall are at the same elevation, this will place the shelf at a height of 36 in. (914 mm), which is an ADA recommendation. If they are at different elevations, contact your 3M sales representative or 3M Technical Service to discuss options. Note: The system requires an opening that complies exactly with the dimensions listed in the figure. If you plan to finish the opening, the rough opening must be large enough to accommodate the finished materials and still maintain these dimensions. 31 in. [787 mm] 2 x 6 in. treated wood frame recommended 21.5 in. High [546 mm] 33 in. [838 mm] from floor on staff side to opening Outer Edge (Flange) 24.5 in. [622 mm] 28 in. [711 mm] wide in. 17 Side elevation. 36 in 915 mm 33in 33 in 838 mm V2_side_elevation Wall thickness and weight bearing capacity The system can be installed in walls with depths that range from 4 in. (102 mm) to 18 in. (457 mm). The wall should be strong enough to bear the weight of the 3M Intelligent Return, which means it should be able to handle the additional 225 lb. [102 kg] when the system is placed on it B 3M, All rights reserved. 17
Minimum distances between RFID systems This section lists minimum distances required between 3M RFID systems in order to avoid RF interference. In some situations, these distances may not be sufficient, though this can only be determined on-site. Specific systems may have additional requirements regarding cable routing, power supplies, other sources of interference and space for clearance for maintenance, workflow, and other considerations. See the discussion in the Model 8900 Architect/Contractor s Package. Model 8900B and Model 9900 systems, or mixed environments that include an 8900B and a 9900 system (which use common electronics), can be placed closer than 15 feet [4,6 m] apart when systems are connected by sync cable. See the discussion in the Model 8900B or Model 9900 Architect/Contractor s Package B 3M, All rights reserved. 18
** Four foot [1,2 m] minimum applies to all 895 pad units and SelfCheck units without a cabinet. For SelfCheck units enclosed in a cabinet, there are no distance restrictions. # This restriction can be worked around by creating a single large system by running lattice to lattice cables between systems. This combined system cannot exceed eight lattices. Measurement is from the RFID reader. Minimum access requirements The hallway and access doors between the shipping area where the system is received and the room that will house the 3M Intelligent Return and Sorter System must meet the specifications shown in the figure in order to move the system into place. Minimum door width requirements: 36 in [914 mm] Minimum hall width requirements: 36 in [914 mm] 28XX_minimum_door_hall_req B 3M, All rights reserved. 19
Minimum distances to walls and obstructions The system requires a minimum of 18 in. [457 mm] between the induction unit and the wall or other obstructions. 3M recommends a minimum of 36 in. [914 mm] between the sorter and the wall or other obstruction. 18 in [457 mm] Recommended Intelligent Return 18 in [457 mm] Recommended 28XX_distance_to_walls B 3M, All rights reserved. 20
Install the surround Install the surround for the Intelligent Return system fascia. Verify that the bottom surface of the surround opening is the correct distance from the ground, which is 33 in. (+/- 0.5 in) [84 cm] from the floor or pavement on the patron side of the wall. Use a two-foot level and torpedo level on the surround sill surface to level the surround. Fasten the surround securely in place by at least six #8 2 in. (three each side) wood screws and flat washers through the surround walls into the surrounding wall studs. Install shims in appropriate locations to maintain the surround position B 3M, All rights reserved. 21
