This report summarizes the data collected from the 1982 Commercial Atlantic Salmon fishery. Weekly catches are given by weight and by number for Statistical Sections, Areas, Management Areas, Insular Newfoundland, Labrador and Province. Historical, catch, effort, and mean weight data are provided in tabular as well as graphic form. Maps, included, indicate the sections, areas and management areas into which the province is divided (Waldron 1974). ~ ~ RESUME Ash, E.G.M Atlantic salmon commercial catch statistics, Newfoundland and Labrador, Can. Data Rep. Fish. Aquat.
7 INTRODUCTION This publication continues a series of reports that give vital statistics from the Newfoundland and Labrador Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) commercial - fishery. Data for previous years are available in May and Lear (1971), Lear (1973), Waldron (1974), Reddin and Waldron (1976), Reddin and Day (198), Moores and Dawe (198), Reddin and Short (1981), Short and Reddin (1981a, 1981b), and Moores et al. (1984). Compilation of these data form an integral part in updating the-database required to assess and examine the status of insular Newfoundland and Labrador Atlantic salmon populations. DATA COLLECTION METHODS Data were obtained from three sources; sales slips, local sales estimates and commercial licence data. Sales slips or purchase slips were supplied to fish buyers by Fisheries Statistics and Systems Branch, Department of Fisheries and Oceans and designed to include such information as daily catch (lbs) by species and size, price per unit weight, fisherman1s name, buyers name, community where fish were landed and type of fishing gear used. In addition, buyers were asked when purchasing salmon to record the number and size of the salmon and state of processing in which they were purchased. Local sales represent those salmon landings not recorded on purchase slips. These include salmon eaten by the fishermen, given away, or sold directly to consumers. For each community this quantity was estimated monthly by the local fisheries officers and submitted to Fisheries Statistics and Systems Branch on supplementary purchase slip B. Local sales were based on an average obtained from selected fishermen of each community. The accuracy and precision of this estimate are unknown and it may not include all salmon caught in non-salmon gear. Licence data were obtained from the Resource Management Branch, Licencing Section. These include number of fishermen as well as length (fathoms) and numbers of nets they were licenced to fish. DATA PROCESSING Data from Purchase Slips were computer filed by day and by community, then summarized by standardized weeks (Appendix 1) by community, Statistical Section, Statistical Area, Fisheries Management Area, NAFO Unit Area, NAFO Division, insular Newfoundland, Labrador and Province. Salmon catches were reported in different landed states of processing such as round, gutted head-on, or dressed gutted head-off fish. For consistency, all values were converted to round weights using conversion factors established in 1953 (Reddin and Short 198). The conversion factors were: (1) gutted, head on (x 1.2) to round weight; (2) dressed gutted, head off (x 1.25) to round weight. All catches recorded in pounds were converted to kilograms. Local sales were reported by month and by community were prorated over the daily landings from 1
8 Purchase Slips. Where local sales were reported for a particular month within which there were no daily catch data, they were divided by the number of days in the month. For the month of May, local sales were divided by 18, the number of days which the fishing season was open. Weights and percentage of local sales by month appear at the bottom of each table in Appendices 2-7. They have been included in the catch statistics also shown in the same tables. In the tables of Appendices 2-7, the adjusted catch and estimated numbers were initially calculated at the community level and sumned to the appropriate Statistical Section, Area, and province. Landings were recorded in two size categories: small salmon (lsw one-sea-winter), those less than 2.7 kg; large salmon (MSW - multi-sea-winter), those equal to or greater than 2.7 kg. Unfortunately, buyers often did not record size, usually when size did not affect market value. In these cases landings were recorded as unsized. Also, the proportions of large and small in local sales were not known and these were generally recorded as unsized. The unsized salmon were proportioned into large and small salmon by one of two methods. If the total weight of salmon reported as large and small in a week was equal to or greater than 1% of the unsized landings in that week, the unsized salmon were divided into large and small categories according to the proportions of large and small in the sized catch. Alternatively, if the total weight of sized salmon represented less than 1% of the unsized catch, predetermined default proportions of large and small salmon (based on the previous five year mean proportions) were applied to the unsized salmon to divide them into large and small categories. Small and large mean weights by week were derived from sales slip data that included both weight and corresponding numbers of salmon. Calculations simply involved dividing the total weight by the numbers of salmon reported for each size category. Mean weights were calculated on a weekly basis at the community level, then the weights and numbers of salmon were totalled and redivided at the various other levels. Mean weights for the entire fishing season were calculated from total weight and numbers of fish, not by averaging weekly mean weights. The estimated numbers of salmon in each size category were derived from current catch data utilizing either the calculated weekly mean weights or predetermined default weekly mean weights. The calculated weekly mean weights were divided into total adjusted catch for each category if in any given week the number of salmon in a size category (sample size) from which the mean weight obtained was equal to or greater than 5 fish. Default mean weights were used to derive estimated numbers of salmon when the sample size was less than 5 fish in any given week. Default mean weights were the seasonal mean weights which were calculated for the Statistical Area in which the community is located, if the sample size over the entire season for that particular Area was equal to or exceeded 5 fish. Otherwise, the mean weights by size category from total insular Newfoundland catch data were used. All estimated numbers of salmon were obtained from the community catch statistics by week and then added to produce both weekly and seasonal numbers of fish for Statistical Sections, Statistical Areas, etc., 2
9 Effort data were reported in total fathoms for each fisherman, then added to produce total effort by community, Statistical Section, Statistical Area, insular Newfoundland, Labrador and province. The total number of licenced gear units were derived by dividing total fathomage by 5 (1 gear unit = 5 fathoms). STATISTICAL CODES A description and ratfonale for the geographical regions by which data were broken down was published by Waldron (1974a). Briefly, Statistical Areas (A-a) and Statistical Sections (1-53) begin at the northern tip of the Great Northern Peninsula and proceed clockwise around the coast and northward to the tip of Labrador (Fig. 1 and 2). NAFO Divisions (IF-5Z) and unit areas (21-51) are also included to allow comparison with historical data (Fig. 3). ACKNOWLEDGMENTS For collecting the data, the author acknowledges the staff of Fisheries Statistics and Systems Branch and Resource Management Branch. Computer programs were developed by Eric Harvey and L. Feltham of Fisheries Statistics and Systems Branch. Neila Caines assisted with data tabulation and computation.
