NEW PRODUCT DESIGN STRATEGIES design quick to stay ahead of the competition Tuesday, November 8 th, 2011 Harry Watt North Carolina State University and Assisting the US Forest Service s Wood Education And Resource Center Web at
North Carolina State University Wood Products Extension Since 1950 has supported the wood products industry in North Carolina in the areas of wood education, training, troubleshooting problems, research and overall assistance in making a large variety of wood products. It is the policy of the State of North Carolina to provide equality of opportunity in education and employment for all students and employees. Educational and employment decisions should be based on factors that are germane to academic abilities or job performance. Accordingly, the North Carolina State University ( NC State ) does not practice or condone unlawful discrimination in any form, as defined by this policy.
Wood Education and Resource Center Is the center of the US Forest Service effort of support of the hardwood forest industry in the states east of the Great Plains Located in Princeton, West Virginia, WERC project s websites = and The work upon which this webcast is based was funded in whole or in part through a grant awarded by the Wood Education and Resource Center, Northeastern Area State and Private Forestry, U.S. Forest Service. In accordance with Federal law and U.S. Department of Agriculture policy, this institution is prohibited from discriminating on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, age, or disability. To file a complaint of discrimination, write USDA Director, Office of Civil Rights, Room 326-W, Whitten Building, 1400 Independence Avenue, SW, Washington, DC or call (202) (voice and TDD). USDA is an equal opportunity provider and employer.
New Ideas in Product Design Quick is the word in getting new products designed Customer can t wait for products that meets their needs Competitors are getting faster too! Only commodity manufacturers who are the low price leader may relax in getting faster in new product design
Designs Drive Profit Margins Designs drives both revenues and expenses Design determines what materials are used, what quality of materials are used how much materials are used, what waste is incurred in manufacturing Designs determine how easy it is to spin off modified versions of the product and whether a product line can be created from an initial product design Product design drives how well products run the factory
What s New in Product Design-3 D Software Create a paper model to share with other designers and use for marketing Create a solid model to share with production and drive CNC equipment Ability to create 2-D photos to share with vendors, customers, designers, company personnel-all to better communicate
New Ideas- Box With Embellishments For casegoods like cabinets and furniture Create a basic box then add frames, applied mouldings, turnings, etc. to add style features Can use the basic box to create economies of scale Can preengineer the basic box to speed up the design process = better/faster/cheaper to the customer
New Ideas-Better Engineering Systems Have to have a system to manage the flow of information on manufactured parts, purchased components, end items, etc. Lots of stuff to manage Part drawings Subassemblies Assembled products Instruction sheets Cost data
New Ideas-Coordinated Product Lines Design the first item then copy and modify the rest Example-upholstered furniture-chair, loveseat, sofa Carry into other product lines Cabinets Furniture-all types of furniture Millwork
New Ideas-Dynamic Designs Formula based-example a raised panel door Uses variables and fixed dimensions User inputs overall dimensions Software adjusts all internal part sizes Almost instant engineering Examples-cabinets, furniture, millwork
New Ideas-Engineering Management 3-D modeling software can interact with spreadsheets Import and export data to modify designs and get information out of the model Bills of materials or parts lists are the most important type of information to obtain Must organize the engineering information as the model is created to be able to get the information out properly
New Ideas-3 D Software Can Produce Standard Drawings Can create the standard three views of products-top, front, side Can create cut through view at any location Can zoom in on important details Engineer can add text to explain details
Free 3-D Design Software From Google SketchUp is a free paper modeler 3-D design software Can design from scratch will lots of detail Can apply colors and wood grains Works well for cabinets, furniture and millwork Buy the Dummies Book and teach yourself to design
New Design and Engineering Strategies Want to out perform the competition and meet the needs of the customer-better/faster/cheaper Can create new designs and modifications quicklycater to those who value dimensional changes to suit their needs Can better support a custom products program by having items fit correctly the first time
Summary-New Design and Engineering Strategies Better/Faster/Cheaper is the name of the game Use dynamic formulas to quickly create modified and new items 3-D design software can create models with parts that fit as well as export 2-D jpg photos to share Design software can assist in creating parts lists, bills of materials and assist in costing products
