The fall of journalism There was a time when news organizations actually were able to generate enough advertising revenue to pay for operations. It was a simpler time for the Internet, where valuable outlets could create an engaged audience. This is not true any more, and has resulted in the failure of sustainable journalism. Advertising revenue is now dominated by Facebook, Google, and other large social sharing platforms, leaving journalists and news organizations bleeding to financial death, while completely dependant on a few near-monopolistic platforms for revenue. It is clear that new digital platforms have disrupted media, allowing for distributors to retain the lion s share of the monetary rewards while producers, i.e. journalists and news organizations, do not benefit nearly enough. Take for instance, Facebook which has over 2B users, and generates most of its revenue from users sharing content created by other people.
