Sustainable Low Individual Cost Eating Mission SLICE strives to draw attention to reducing food waste and to teach sustainable living habits on college campuses by connecting the student body. Kayla Nightingale. Amanda Freestone. Kenneth Hughes. Casey Korbisch
goals & objectives SLICE enables college students to save money on grocery bills while striving to reduce food waste. SLICE s website groups students on school campuses based on their typical grocery needs, providing a suggested grocery list and corresponding coupons. In this group, students will purchase grocery items and divide the cost and food accordingly. 1. Spread knowledge about sustainable living and food waste prevention 2. Compose a working website within the first month of internal operations and set-up 3. Gain attention and knowledge of 10 universities interested in enhancing sustainability on campus with 1 year 4. Implement the SLICE program successfuly by fall of 2011 Number of SLICE Implemented Schools Projected SLICE Growth 5. Obtain 3 working sponsors by the end of the first year in operation Years After SLICE Start Up SLICE is a large program that requires much marketing and recruiting to become a success. The graph above shows an idea of where SLICE is expected to be in the next 10 years.
slice.com at your service SLICE organizes its members through a user-friedly website. The website will be updated and managed by the members of the SLICE company. Website Features: user-friendly interface easily read and easily navigated displays school individuality positively daily sustainable and recycling tips advertisments related to consumer profile easy drop box choices for food student profiles for personal introductions This webstite page shows a generic representation of what the SLICE webisites will look like. Later, each school will have its own website reflecting the schools mascot and colors. SLICE Features: food brands limited to value items introduces students within a student body free service transportaion sign-up volunteer opportunities sustainable living introduction price check
our target profiles Year 1 Consumer: their identity, needs and wants college students with expanding expectations individuals who want to lessen food waste Year 3 individuals who want to lessen landfills individuals who want to save money Year 5 Year 7 individuals who want meet other environmental minded indviduals individuals who want to volunteer This diagrams show the schools that SLICE plans on gaining participants from in the coming year. Next steps... After the successful implementaion of SLICE in colleges, SLICE plans on expanding to different consumer profile such as workplace urban and rural neighborhoods restaurants businesses
others like us The EPA s WasteWise program and Greenhouse living programs on college campuses are SLICE s main competitors. Unlike sustainability-themed residence halls, SLICE s reduction of food waste does not depend on incorporating students who are already concerned with environmental issues. WasteWise focuses on reducing waste and providing energy audits, targeting businesses, government, and non-profit organizations; however, SLICE appeals to college student s inclination to reduce the cost of living, encouraging students about food waste reduction while saving them money as a result.
why students choose SLICE SLICE provides an easy way to develop cost-efficient habits by purchasing grocery items. Students will save money. Users are motivated to take part in this service because they are contributing to a more sustainable environment through reducing the effects of food waste. SLICE s website offers convenient tools in consideration of the mindset of the average college student. SLICE s simplicity and ease of use will encourage continued participation among other college campuses. 40% of all the food produced in the U.S. is thrown out. Saving money is an incentive to living sustainably. Food contributes to the 3rd largest waste stream.
how our lights stay on Our service is free to colleges and universities. Initial set-up costs will be provided by sponsors in the community with a common sustainability goal, such as Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education Creative Change Local Grocery Stores Southface Revenue will be generated through the advertisements placed on the website. These advertisements will ideally be used by food manufacturers and super market chains. In addition, general shopping data is sold to supermarkets for the enhancement of the consumer s experience.
consumer cammy s story 1 Consumer Cammy is a freshman at a university. She is tired of the same cafeteria choices, and wants to have a wider variety of food in her diet. 2 But after her first trip to the store, she is unable to finish half of the bread before there is mold. She also notices that her lettuce head has gotten soggy. 3She goes onto her university s website and logs onto SLICE.com. She fills out a survey about what food she needs, and she is matched with 3 other students. 4 She carpools with her group to the grocery store. And together they collect the food from the list they made on SLICE.com. INTERVIEW WITH CAMMY Pros: I was able to finish all my food. Not much was wasted. I didn t spend as much money as other times I meant new people, and we share same food needs. It was cool to see who eats the same things as me. Cons: I ran out of some of food before others; I had lots of bread but no ham! When we paid, it took us a while to fumble with money and change. Carpooling was hard to find because none of my group members had cars. 5 Returning home, Cammy and her group used tupperware and ziplocks to divide the food evenly. Let s see what Cammy has to say...
making connections Tangible Benefits: monetary support from sponsors less waste in landfills student participation support of locally grown produce support from environmetally aware consumers Intangible Benefits: recognition of food waste problems awareness of landfill sizes providing information for environmentally unaware and unconcerned building new foundations to living sustainably understanding earthly effects of waste saves induviduals money
our expanding future barcode scanner tool added to application for instant dollar and food saving data SLICE iphone application for added convenience online tool to calculate student s savings and pounds of food saved website
