Yun Hazel Hall, Office 411 (703) jyun9@gmu.edu Welcome to Antitrust Economics: The goal of the course is to teach the underlying economic foundations that drive antitrust analyses, and to apply economic theory to the facts of real antitrust cases, particularly at the U.S. Federal Trade Commission and U.S. Department of Justice Antitrust Division. Broadly, each class will be combine teaching the core economic concepts with using actual antitrust cases to illustrate the principles. Students are expected to come to class prepared and ready to discuss the assigned readings. Office Hours: Thursdays 2-4 p.m. and by appointment. I am also available via . Text: John Kwoka and Larry White (eds.), The Antitrust Revolution (6 th edition). Supplemental readings will be made available on TWEN. Course Requirements and Grading: I write to discover what I know. Flannery O Connor Written Assignments: There will be two homework assignments. Each assignment will involve writing on a specific topic, e.g., critiquing expert testimony; offering advice to policy makers on the merits of an antitrust case; and devising a divestiture package to best address a problematic merger. The goal of each homework assignment is to replicate the type of memos produced at both U.S. antitrust agencies and at law firms specializing in antitrust. Each assignment is worth 20 percent of your overall grade for a total of 40 percent. All submissions are via no later than midnight EDT on the due date of the assignment. Late submissions will receive zero credit. Class Participation: Participation in class will count for 10 percent of your grade. (Quality of participation is weighed more heavily than quantity.) Final Exam: The final exam will be administered on Wednesday, December 6 PM (there is no make-up exam) and will count for 50 percent of your grade. The final exam is closed book/notes. It will consist of short answer questions and multiple-choice. 1
