2 Introduction The following report details the rate of adoption and the impact of Airbnb in majority-minority communities and compares the presence of Airbnb to hotels in these areas. The study captures a snapshot of how home sharing was embraced by residents during the ending October 1, The analysis focuses on seven major metropolitan areas in the Northeast, South, and Midwest, and was conducted of majority non-white i.e., majority-minority block groups using data from the US Census Bureau s American Community Survey 2014, Airbnb proprietary booking and data, and Smith Travel In these seven communities, we consistently find that the percentage of Airbnb in majority-minority communities exceeds the percentage of hotel rooms. Key findings In Washington, DC, only 7% of hotel rooms are in majority-minority block groups, compared to 40% of Airbnb booked in the study period. Across the seven study areas, there were approximately 1 million guest arrivals to Airbnb in majority-minority block groups. The typical host earnings in majority-minority block groups ranges from $3,500 (Cook County) to $7,100 (Orleans Parish) annually. In all seven study areas, the percentage of Airbnb booked in the study period in majority-minority block groups is greater than the percentage of hotel rooms. The percentage of hotel rooms in majority-minority block groups ranges from 7% (Washington, DC) to 30% (Philadelphia). The percentage of Airbnb booked in the study period in majority-minority block groups ranges from 15% (Suffolk County) to 43% (Orleans Parish). The percentage of the population in majority-minority block groups ranges from 36% (Cook County) to 70% (Baltimore City).

11 Conclusion Around the world, Airbnb guests are discovering new destinations that travelers often miss. Far from the traditional tourist hotspots, these destinations and the hosts who live there provide Airbnb guests with a seamless way to experience a rich range of local offerings. And in return, Airbnb guests have an opportunity to invest in the people and places they visit. Indeed, in communities large and small, Airbnb is helping travelers explore the paths less traveled, while providing hosts and businesses in majority-minority communities with a critical source of supplemental income and economic opportunity. Perhaps most exciting is that the number of hosts and guests in majority-minority areas is growing rapidly each. Airbnb guests are seeking new travel experiences, and Airbnb hosts are eager to introduce guests to their neighborhoods, cities, and regions.
