16 Effect of different additives on rheological behavior and properties of ultra low cement alumina refractory castables Abstract During few past decades there were trends towards replacement of refractory castables with refractory bricks. Specially low and ultra low cement castables are used spreadly in iron and steel industry due to its superior rheological and mechanical and physical properties. at first refractory castables were made of only aggregates and cement. In future addition of fillers and additives (deflocculants) with the aim of rheological properties and workability optimization were followed. In this project the effect of different additives such as Budit8H, CastamentFS20 and Darvan811D on rheological behavior and physical and mechanical properties of ulc castables based on tabular Alumina were evaluated. Also the comparision of the effect of additives mentioned with conventional additive such as TPP on properties of ulc alumina castables and as the result reach to premium additive were studied. rheological and mechanical and physical properties of mentioned castables were evaluated by flow, CCS, Bulk density, Apparent porosity. Microstructural observation was followed by SEM. Also created phases in tested samples after firing at 1500 C were defined by XRD. Results show ulc Alumina castables including CastamentFS20 had highest flow values due to chemical structure and special mode of action of this additive. Also these castables had highest strength and density values and lowest porosity after firing at different temperatures. For the first time Budit8H was used in this project and samples including this additive showed improved properties with acceptable results. Using reactive alumina and fume silica had effective role in preparation of optimized formulation and as the result improved properties of tested samples. Also formation of mullite in tested Samples after firing at 1500 C Caused increasing strength. Decreasing water content from 5% to 4% in Samples in comparision with samples including TPP caused increasing strength and density and decreasing porosity. Amir Ghaffari
