Dust, when machined or punched may cause skin or eye irritation. Fumes, if decomposed may irritate eyes, nose, and throat. POTENTIAL HEALTH EFFECTS: EYE: Dust from milling operations may cause irritation or injury due to mechanical action. SKIN: Powder from milling operations may cause skin irritation. INGESTION: Not considered a normal route of entry INHALATION: Fibrous glass dust may be released from the fiber-glass cloth substrate when machined. ACGIH TLV is 10 mg/m3 TWA for particles <5 microns in diameter. DELAYED EFFECTS: IARC has categorized continuous filament FIBROUS GLASS (the type of fibrous glass used in textile applications such as manufacturing glass fabric for prepregging and laminate manufacture) as not classifiable with respect to human carcinogenicity (Group 3). This classification was based on the fact that the evidence from human, as well as animal, studies evaluated by IARC was insufficient to classify continuous filament fibrous glass. Fiber glass wool (primarily used for insulation in a variety of applications) was classified as a possible human carcinogen by IARC (Group 2B). This classification was primarily based on studies in which experimental animals were exposed to wool glass fibers through non-natural routes, such as injection or implantation. 2 4.0 FIRST AID MEASURES EYES: For dust generated during milling operations, remove contact lenses at once. Immediately flush eyes with copious amounts of water or normal saline for at least 15 minutes. If irritation persists, seek medical attention. SKIN: Wash or shower with soap and cold water to prevent fiberglass dust from entering skin pores. INGESTION: If large amounts are ingested, consult physician INHALATION: If overcome by dust, smoke, gases or fumes, remove to fresh air. If not breathing, give mouth to mouth resuscitation. Call physician. ADVICE TO PHYSICIAN: Treat symptomatically. Decomposition gases, smoke, and fumes caused by exposure of the material to high heat may include hydrogen bromide, hydrogen cyanide, carbon monoxide and aromatic hydrocarbons. Signs and symptoms of pulmonary edema may be caused by hydrogen bromide inhalation. Spills and releases may have to be reported to Federal and/or local authorities. 7.0 HANDLING AND STORAGE HANDLING: The primary exposure route is inhalation of dust when the material is machined or from fumes, smoke, vapors and gases when heated. 3 STORAGE: Store in a dry place away from moisture, excessive heat and sources of ignition. ENGINEERING CONTROLS: A continuous supply of fresh air to the milling operations workplace together with removal of process dust through exhaust systems is recommended. Processing dust may be a fire hazard; remove periodically from exhaust hoods, duct work and other surfaces using appropriate personal protection. PERSONAL PROTECTION: SKIN PROTECTION: Gloves and coveralls should be worn when prolonged or repeated contact occurs. Clothing should be either discarded or cleaned after use. Do not wear dust contaminated clothing home. EYE PROTECTION: Use appropriate eye protection (safety glasses) when machining material. Goggles are recommended when high levels of dust are present, such as during equipment cleaning operations, changing dust collector filters, or floor sweeping operations.
