3 Sida 1 Rubber, vulcanized Material specifications 1 Scope This standard gives requirements for the specification of vulcanised rubber based on the properties of individual rubber types. The standard contains specification tables for the physical properties characterising the rubber as well as a designation system. Since the physical properties of rubber depend on the type of rubber, all rubbers are classified in up to four types and organised by hardness. The standard includes: Natural rubber (NR) Styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) Nitrile rubber (NBR) Hydrogenated nitrile rubber (HNBR) Nitrile rubber mixed with PVC (NBR/PVC) Chloroprene rubber (CR) Acrylic rubber (ACM) Ethylene acrylic rubber (AEM) Fluorocarbon rubber (FKM) Silicone rubber (VMQ) Epichlorohydrin rubber (ECO) Ethylene propylene rubber (EPM and EPDM). It is the main polymer in the rubber material that gives the name of the rubber type. The rubber material can also be mixed with other polymers. The specifications in this standard give good basic materials for general use. For specific product applications materials with modified requirements may be needed. It might also be necessary to specify additional requirements e.g. for the cold-resistant properties. 2 Normative references The following referenced documents are indispensable for the application of this document. When using this standard, start by selecting a rubber polymer in accordance with SS-ISO/TR 7620, and then select the hardness. In several cases there are also supplementary requirements. How to designate the selected material is described in 4. 4 Designation system The vulcanized rubber material number shall be designated by the number of this standard SS " followed by rubber type, hardness, type number, and designation(s) for supplementary requirements. Supplementary requirements: C = Cold-resistant F = Fuel resistance L = Long-term properties O = Oil resistance Oz = T = Tear resistance For example. SS NR 70-1-C-L All materials have certain mandatory property requirements to fulfil. For certain materials the requirements can be more stringent due to supplementary requirements. Table 1 lists the supplementary requirements possible for the different materials.

This makes it possible to manufacture soft rubber products with good mechanical properties. For manufacturing

8 Sida 6 of complex products the good processability is an advantage. The low temperature properties are good and the mechanical damping is very low. The oil and ozone resistance is poor. Specifications are given in Tables 3 to 8. 11 Sida Styrene-Butadiene Rubber, SBR Styrene-butadiene rubber requires reinforcing fillers to achieve good mechanical properties. Compared with natural rubber the styrene-butadiene rubber has higher mechanical damping and not so good low temperature properties. The wear properties are often better than natural rubber when used in tyres at high temperature and high speed. The oil and ozone resistances are poor. Specifications are given in Tables 9 to 12.
