1 WELD 15 - Welding and Cutting Fundamentals ( version 21812L ) Course Title Course Development Support Welding and Cutting Fundamentals Course Description Standard No This course introduces the student to basic welding and cutting techniques. Topics include welding safety, Oxyfuel cutting, Plasma Arc cutting, Air Carbon Arc cutting and gouging, base metal preparation, and weld quality requirements. This course aligns with select modules found in NCCER Levels I and II welding curricula. Comprehension 2 Set up oxyfuel equipment. 3 Light and adjust oxyfuel torch. 4 Shut down and disassemble oxyfuel cutting equipment. 5 Demonstrate proper procedures for changing cylinders. 6 Perform straight line and square shapes. 7 Perform piercing and slot cutting. 8 Perform bevel cutting. 9 Perform washing and gouging. 1 Operate a motorized, portable oxyfuel gas cutting machine. 3 Plasma Arc Cutting Explain the plasma arc cutting processes. Comprehension 2 Identify plasma arc cutting equipment. Knowledge 3 Prepare and set up plasma arc cutting equipment. 4 Use plasma arc cutting equipment to make various types of cuts. 5 Properly store equipment and clean the work area after use. 4 Air Carbon Arc Cutting and Gouging Identify and explain the air carbon arc cutting (CAC-A) process and equipment. Comprehension 2 Select and install CAC-A electrodes. 3 Prepare the work area and CAC-A equipment for safe operation. 4 Use CAC-A equipment for washing and gouging activities. Mechanism

Comprehension 4 Explain the effects of preheat and postheat on metals with reference to heataffected zone (HAZ), cracking, and grain or crystal structure. Comprehension 11 Soldering and Brazing Describe the proper use of the PPE, tools, and materials needed to solder or braze copper tubing.
