SCOPE AND CLASSIFICATION 1.1 Scope. Thi pecification cover all nickel-copper-aluminum alloy wrought form formerly claified a cla A. Thi alloy i deignated under the Unified Numbering Sytem for Metal and Alloy a UNS N Except for cae where nonmagnetic propertie are paramount, thi alloy i intended to be age hardened prior to placing the material in ervice. 1.2 Claification Form and condition. The material hould be furnihed in the following form and condition, a pecified (ee 6.2). Form 1 - Bar, rod, unaged. Condition: Hot finihed, unaged Cold drawn, unaged. Annealed (hot finihed or cold drawn), unaged. Form 2 - Bar, rod, age hardened. Condition: Hot finihed and age hardened Cold drawn and age hardened Annealed (hot finihed or cold drawn), and age hardened. 5 2.3 Order of precedence. In the event of a conflict between the text of thi document and the reference cited herein, the text of thi document hall take precedence. Nothing in thi document, however, uperede applicable law and regulation unle a pecific exemption ha been obtained. 3. REQUIREMENTS 3.1 Proceing. Nickel-copper-aluminum alloy hall be produced by the electric furnace (EAF) or vacuum induction furnace (VIM) proce and further refined by any proce proved adequate to pa the low train rate tenile tet (ee 3.4 and 4.3.6). Cating may be by ingot or continuou cat method. Cat ingot or billet hall be hot worked to a fine uniform grain tructure. Final proceing hall be by hot working or cold working, and heat treating Forging a final product. For all forging other than bar or rod, a forging ketch hall be prepared when pecified (ee 6.2). Forging with final forged diameter or ditance acro parallel urface of 4 inche or greater hall be to uch a configuration that they can be ultraonically inpected 100 percent by volume with three directional coverage Heat treatment. Heat treatment hall be controlled in accordance with one of the following pecification: A) AMS 2750 and meet the minimum requirement for a cla 2, type RM furnace with a uniformity requirement of ±25 F. B) Appendix H of API Specification 6A. Furnace with one working enor in each control zone have been urveyed within the lat three month and furnace with more than one working enor in each control zone have been urveyed within the lat ix month. c) MIL-STD Solution treatment. Solution treating hall be accomplihed by holding at a minimum temperature of 1600 F, followed by water quenching. The time at temperature mut be uch that the entire volume of material i heated to the olution treating temperature Age hardening. Age hardening hall be accomplihed by any proce proved adequate to meet the mechanical property requirement. 3.2 Chemical requirement. Chemical compoition of the material hall conform to table I. When a product (check) analyi i pecified (ee 6.2), the material hall conform to the requirement of table I, ubject to the permiible tolerance for check analyi. 3.3 Mechanical propertie. Mechanical propertie hall be a pecified in table II through VI, a applicable. Unaged material hall meet the mechanical propertie pecified after heat treatment Unaged material. Material ordered in the unaged condition hall, after proper heat treatment, be capable of meeting the mechanical propertie of the correponding heat treated condition of the form pecified in table II through VI, a applicable Bending propertie (heet and trip). Sheet and trip, except half hard and age hardened or full hard and age hardened trip, hall not crack when ubjected to cold bending (See ). 5

6 3.4 Suceptibility to intergranular cracking. The material hall not be uceptible to intergranular cracking (ee 4.3.6). 3.5 Duplex grain tructure. Duplex grain tructure i not permitted in bartock with a diameter of 3½ inche or le. Duplex grain tructure i defined a any tructure in which the average grain ize for the two grain ize pecimen, prepared in accordance with 4.3.5, differ by more than 5 ASTM grain ize number. The uniformity of grain ize hall be determined for bar and rod a pecified in Plate, heet, trip, and wire hall be excluded from thi requirement. 3.6 Recovered material. The offeror/contractor i encouraged to ue recovered material to the maximum extent practicable, in accordance with paragraph of the Federal Acquiition Regulation (FAR). TABLE I. Chemical compoition. The diameter, ditance between parallel face, or thickne of hot finihed or cold drawn bar and rod, aged and unaged, hall not vary at any point by more than the amount pecified in table VII or VIII, a applicable Out of roundne. 14 3.9.3 Plate, heet, and trip Thickne. The thickne tolerance of cold rolled nickelcopper-aluminum alloy heet and trip, all condition, hall conform to the requirement pecified in table XII. The tolerance on thickne of hot rolled nickel-copper-aluminum alloy plate, all condition, hall conform to the requirement pecified in table XIII Width. The width of heet and trip hall not vary from the ordered width by more than the amount pecified in table XIV and thoe for plate hall be a pecified in table XV Length Sheet. Unle otherwie pecified (ee 6.2), heet hall be furnihed in cut length. The permiible variation in length hall be plu 1 / 8 inch, minu nothing Strip. Unle nominal or tock length or cut length are pecified, trip, in condition other than age hardened, hall be furnihed in coil in thicknee up through inch and in random traight length in thicknee over inch. Unle otherwie pecified (ee 6.2), age hardened trip hall be furnihed in traightened (cut) length only. The material hall be uniform in quality and condition, clean, mooth, flat, commercially traight, and be free from foreign material and imperfection uch a pipe, lap, crack and eam which, due to their nature, degree, or extent may detrimentally affect the uitability for the ervice intended. Product ordered with a hot finihed, rough turned or emimooth machined urface may contain urface imperfection that hall not be conidered injuriou unle they exceed the recommended machining allowance pecified in table XXIII. Inpection procedure for hot finihed or machined material hall be a pecified in QUALITY ASSURANCE PROVISIONS 4.1 Reponibility for inpection. Unle otherwie pecified in the contract, the contractor i reponible for the performance of all inpection requirement a pecified herein. Except a otherwie pecified in the contract, the contractor may ue hi own or any other facilitie uitable for the performance of the inpection requirement pecified herein, unle diapproved by the Government. The Government reerve the right to perform any of the inpection et forth in the pecification where uch inpection are deemed neceary to aure that upplie and ervice conform to precribed requirement Reponibility for compliance. All item hall meet all requirement of ection 3 and 5. The inpection et forth in thi pecification hall become a part of the contractor over all inpection ytem or quality program. The abence of any inpection requirement in the pecification hall not relieve the contractor of the reponibility of enuring that all product upplied to the Government for acceptance comply with all requirement of the contract. Sampling inpection, a a part of manufacturing operation, i an acceptable practice to acertain conformance to requirement, either indicated or actual, nor doe it commit the Government to accept defective material. 4.2 Quality conformance inpection Definition of lot Viual inpection, duplex grain ize and mechanical tet. A lot hall conit of material of one heat, form, condition, finih (for viual only), and ize, and heat treated in the ame furnace charge when ordered in the heat treated condition. A) Heat treated condition hall include age hardened, annealed and age hardened, and annealed only. B) For duplex grain ize and mechanical tet, ize hall refer to the ame thickne of heet, trip, or plate, and the ame cro-ection of other product Chemical analyi. Specimen hall be taken after the final heat treatment. When the material i hipped in the annealed condition, pecimen may be taken after the final anneal and hall be heat treated in accordance with Mechanical, bend and wire wrapping tet for rod, bar, wire, and flat product. One tet pecimen hall be taken from each lot of 30,000 pound, or le. Two tet pecimen hall be taken from lot weighing over 30,000 pound Sampling of lot for mechanical tet of forged part, 250 pound and le. Specimen from the lot hall be taken from prolongation unle the hape of the finihed part permit a uitable pecimen to be removed without lo of the forging, or the pecimen may be taken from extra forging. One pecimen hall be taken from lot of 30,000 pound or le and two pecimen hall be taken from lot over 30,000 pound Sampling of lot for mechanical tet of forged part, greater than 250 pound. Each forging hall be teted. The deviation from traightne (throw in one revolution) i defined a the difference between the maximum and minimum reading of the dial indicator in one complete revolution of the rod. Straightne in term of depth of chord hall be determined with a traightedge, the length of which i not le than that of the piece being meaured Straightne of bar, heet, and trip. 26 dimenion at the ite of the imperfection. Sufficient material hall be removed to reach the bottom of the imperfection. The cro-ection dimenion i meaured at thi point. If the depth of the imperfection doe not exceed the machining allowance in table XXIII for the applicable ize and form, the product will be acceptable. 4.3 Tet procedure Chemical analyi. The ample elected in accordance with hall be analyzed by the wet chemical or pectrochemical method to determine conformance with table I. In cae of diagreement, the chemical compoition hall be determined in accordance with ASTM E Mechanical tet Aged material. Mechanical tet required for material hipped in the aged condition hall be done on a ample taken from the material after the final heat treatment. Mechanical tet ued to demontrate the capability of a lot to meet the mechanical tet requirement (ee ) may not be ued certify a lot of material hipped in the aged condition Unaged material. When mechanical tet are required for material ordered in the unaged condition to demontrate the capability of the lot to meet the mechanical teting requirement (ee 6.2), the tet pecimen, taken from each lot per , , and , hall be obtained from the material a it i to be to be hipped or from a forged tet coupon, when applicable and heat treted a pecified (ee 6.2). When no heat treatment i pecified, the pecimen hall be annealed, if the material to be hipped ha not been annealed, and aged in accordance with Mechanical tet on a lot from the ame heat that ha previouly been teted in the ame condition (ee 1.2.1), heat treated a pecified above, and found to meet the requirement of thi pecification may be ued to demontate the capability of the lot of unaged material to meet the mechanical tet requirement Heat treatment of unaged mechanical tet pecimen. Unle otherwie pecified (ee 6.2), age hardening of the tet pecimen in hall be performed by heating to F, holding at temperature for 8 to 16 hour depending on hardne of material and deired hardne after aging, furnace cooling to an aim temperature of 900 F then air cooling to room temperature Bar, rod, rectangle, and forged part. All bar, rod, rectangle, and forged part hall be teted full-ize when practicable. When a machined pecimen become neceary, enough metal may be removed from the gauge ection to meet the limitation of the teting machine or the pecimen may be machined to the form and dimenion of the larget tandard round pecimen in ASTM E 8 obtainable from the product being teted. When the product being teted i of uch ize that an ASTM E 8 round pecimen le than inch diameter i needed, minimum elongation requirement of table III hall not apply Axi of the tet pecimen. For bar, rod, rectangle, and forged part up to and including 1½ inche in diameter or thickne, the axi of the tet pecimen hall coincide with the central axi of the piece; over 1½ inche, the axi hall be located midway between the center and urface of the piece. 26

The axi of tenion tet pecimen for bar, rod, rectangle, and forged part hall be parallel to the direction of rolling, drawing, or flow of metal Tenion tet pecimen of plate, heet, and trip.
