5 SUCCESS STORIES GIS/IT DEMAND SERVICES AND CITYWORKS CONSULTING SERVICES O'Fallon, Illinois Burns & McDonnell has worked with the city of O Fallon, Illinois, for almost a decade to maintain, upgrade and enhance its GIS and Enterprise Asset Management systems. As part of our ongoing services, the city identified a need to enhance its staff s ability to see key water distribution system operational data. Burns & McDonnell designed, developed and deployed a GIS-based Web viewer that integrated the city's existing WonderWare SCADA information with its enterprise GIS water distribution system data. The new web viewer improved the city public works staff s ability to see and visualize near real time water distribution system operational data and alarms while leveraging its existing investment in GIS technology and eliminating the need to purchase additional capabilities and licenses of the SCADA software. Burns & McDonnell is also assisting the city with the maintenance and expansion of its usage of the Cityworks Asset and Work Management system. With Burns & McDonnell s help the city has been able to expand its usage of the Cityworks system beyond the public works department including the development of a new public service request portal that allows the city to capture public service requests directly into its Cityworks environment. ENTERPRISE GIS SYSTEM PLANNING AND IMPLEMENTATION Unified Government of Kansas City, Kansas The Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kansas, (UG/KCK) Water Pollution Control (WPC) division identified a need to enhance its abilities to operate and maintain the sewer and stormwater utilities. Burns & McDonnell provided GIS and Enterprise Asset Management systems implementation services to help UG/KCK meet its goals and needs. Burns & McDonnell migrated WPC s CAD-based mapping system for its wastewater collection system to an enterprise GIS-based system to better support the planning, operations and maintenance of the utility. The foundation of WPC s new enterprise GIS is Esri s Local Government Information Model and adjustments were made to the data structure to tailor the data structure to WPC s needs. Burns & McDonnell analyzed WPC s overall department workflows to identify appropriate data structure adjustments. Once the workflow analysis and data migration were complete, WPC was able to manage all its collection system assets within an enterprise Esri GIS database and key Local Government Information Model tools, such as Attribute Assistant, were configured to help the GIS editors within WPC easily and efficiently maintain its data. 6 SUCCESS STORIES ENTERPRISE GIS IMPLEMENTATION Independence, Missouri The city of Independence, Missouri, contracted Burns & McDonnell to implement an Enterprise GIS system based on the ArcGIS for Local Government Information model. This system was implemented so that all city departments will have access to the system and will be integrated with a citywide deployment of the Cityworks Asset and Work Management system. The enterprise GIS system, based on the ArcGIS for Local Government Information Model, is replacing multiple file and personal geodatabases as well as a workgroup ArcGIS for Server system implemented for the Water Pollution Control department. Burns & McDonnell configured a set of data translation tools within the Safe Software FME to migrate the different legacy GIS datasets into the Local Government Information model. The Enterprise ArcGIS Server and geodatabase are now in production and as the city moves forward additional departments, such as the city s electric and water utilities, will be coming online. Burns & McDonnell has provided and is continuing to provide system implementation and data migration services as well as administrator and end-user training. GIS SERVICES Florida Department of Transportation Under GIS Services contracts for the Florida Department of Transportation Districts (FDOTs) 6 and 4, Burns & McDonnell supplies the Districts with GIS services and GIS staff augmentation. For each District, Burns & McDonnell has GIS specialists who work full time in FDOT s offices to support day to day GIS activities and data maintenance workflows. Those specialists are responsible for the management of the office GIS database, the conversion and maintenance of the data library to GIS environment, the development and implementation of new databases, tables, stored procedures and other data management processes supporting GIS. Burns & McDonnell GIS consultants are also responsible for Web development initiatives and the preparation of thematic maps, allowing FDOT to focus staffing needs elsewhere. 6 Success Stories

7 SUCCESS STORIES WASTEWATER MASTER PLAN CONDITION ASSESSMENT Kansas City, Missouri In support of the Kansas City, Missouri, Overflow Control Program, Burns & McDonnell developed and deployed a mobile GIS application to collect, store and manage condition assessment information for the city's syaix wastewater treatment plants. Data collected during the condition assessment included geographic features representing the inspected asset, descriptive data about the asset, condition information, and digital images of the assets and deficiencies. The condition assessment mobile GIS application was built on the ArcGIS Platform. The GIS was housed in an enterprise SDE geodatabase. The mobile GIS tool, used by field inspectors, was developed using ArcGIS Mobile allowing the data to be captured and seamlessly incorporated into the project. ASSET MANAGEMENT SYSTEM IMPLEMENTATION Independence, Missouri Burns & McDonnell was contracted by Independence, Missouri, Water Pollution Control (WPC) to implement the Cityworks Asset and Work Management system. The city s goal for the project was to better manage maintenance activities as well as to incorporate information management into the business lifecycle of the department in order to accomplish more with less staff and funding and more easily address regulatory compliance. By integrating data management into daily maintenance business processes, WPC is able to develop and maintain a mature information data set. While daily maintenance activities use and update the infrastructure data, department managers use the data to make informed decisions about infrastructure management and planning. SIDEWALK INVENTORY AND CONDITION ASSESSMENT Lee's Summit, Missouri The city of Lee s Summit, Missouri, hired Burns & McDonnell to inventory the entire sidewalk network within the city. The goals of the inventory were to capture and record the locations and descriptions of all sidewalk defects in the city and to capture and record the status of all sidewalk crossings in terms of ADA compliance. Burns & McDonnell developed and used a mobile GIS application built on Esri technology. The solution was paired with a GPS unit to collect sidewalk data using tablets. The city used the sidewalk data in conjunction with its Cityworks system to manage sidewalk repairs and rehabilitation. Success Stories 7
