1 SECTION WOOD FLOORING PART 1 - GENERAL 1.1 SECTION REQUIREMENTS A. Submittals: Product Data, Specification Sheets, Samples and Manufacturer Warranty. B. Game lines and logos: Contractor shall match existing conditions and include in their base bid cost to generate any artwork required. 1.2 QUALITY ASSURANCE A. Manufacturer shall be an established firm experienced in field and have been in business a minimum of ten (10) years. B. Manufacturer shall be solvent with no bankruptcy proceedings the previous seven (7) years. C. The flooring contractor must be approved by the Owner. 1.3 WORKING CONDITIONS A. Flooring materials must be allowed to acclimate to building conditions on the job site in a dry, well-ventilated area, not in contact with masonry, and shall be installed at a moisture content not to exceed 8% except in areas of constant high humidity where the moisture content of the flooring shall not exceed 10%. B. The building must be reasonably dry; all openings must be closed in; permanent heating and air conditioning installed and operating. C. Moderate room temperature of 65 degrees (18 C) or more shall be maintained a week preceding and throughout the duration of the work. Humidity conditions within the building shall approximate humidity conditions which will prevail when the building is occupied. Care should be taken to maintain humidity within the range of 35% to 50%. 1.4 WARRANTY A. Flooring manufacturer warrants the material it ships to be free from defects in materials and workmanship for a period of two (2) years and the flooring installer warrants the installation of the flooring to be free of defects in materials and workmanship for a period WOOD FLOORING
2 of two (2) years. The exclusive remedy under this warranty shall be replacement of defective material by the manufacturer or correction of defective installation by the flooring installer. All implied warranties of merchantability or fitness for intended use are limited to the period of this warranty. This warranty excludes consequential damages. B. This warranty does not cover damage caused by fire, winds, floods, chemicals, or other abuse, or by failure of other contractors to adhere to specifications, or neglect of reasonable precaution to provide adequate ventilation during hot and humid weather. This warranty also excludes damage due to excessive dryness or excessive moisture from humidity, spillage, migration through the slab or wall or any other source. This warranty also excludes damage to floors due to ordinary wear and tear, faulty construction of the building, (other than the flooring installation), separation of the concrete slab underlying the floor, settlement of the walls, or use of water on the floor. PART 2 - PRODUCTS 2.1 WOOD FLOORING, GENERAL A. Maple Flooring: Comply with Maple Flooring Manufacturer s Association, Inc. (MFMA) grading rules for species, grade, and cut. 1. Certification: Provide flooring that carries MFMA mark on each bundle or piece. 2.2 FIELD-FINISHED WOOD FLOORING A. Solid-Wood Strip and Plank Flooring: Kiln dried and as follows: 1. Manufacturers: One of the following: a. Action Floor Systems b. Robbins Flooring c. Connor Flooring 2. Flooring shall be Northern Hard Maple standard strip flooring, Tongue and Groove and End Matched., MFMA grade marked and stamped. 3. Species and Grade: Second and Better grade hard maple. 4. Cut: match existing cut. 5. Thickness: 25/32 inch. 6. Face Width: 2-1/4 inches. 7. Lengths: Lengths required to form pattern indicated. 8. Expansion Ridge Technology (ERT), 1/64 milled expansion spacer WOOD FLOORING
3 B. Subfloor to be determined upon demo of damaged area shown in photos and as observed in the field. 1. New subfloor design to be approved by the Owner. The intent is to match the existing conditions, if practical. Contractor shall include in the base bid vapor retarder and asphalt-saturated felt (or approved equal as recommended by wood flooring manufacturer) in the area of work. Upon demolition, existing conditions shall be verified and adjustments made as required. Coordinate with the Owner. C. Urethane Finish System: Complete system of compatible components that is recommended by finish manufacturer for application indicated. 1. Available manufacturers: a. Bona Low VOC sealer, finish and game line paint b. Poloplaz products equal to Bona Low VOC products 2. Stain: Penetrating and nonfading type. a. Color: Match existing conditions. 3. Floor Sealer: Pliable, penetrating type. 4. Finish Coats: Formulated for multicoat application on wood flooring. D. Wood Filler: Compatible with finish system and recommended by filler and finish manufacturers. Provide pigmented filler to match approved samples. 2.3 ACCESSORY MATERIALS A. Vapor Retarder: ASTM D 4397, polyethylene sheet not less than 6.0 mils (0.15 mm) thick. B. Asphalt-Saturated Felt: ASTM D 4869, Type II, or approved equal as recommended by wood flooring manufacturer. C. Wood Flooring Adhesive: Mastic recommended by flooring and adhesive manufacturers for application indicated. D. Fasteners: As recommended by manufacturer, but not less than that recommended in NWFA's "Installation Guidelines: Wood Flooring." E. Rubber Pads: Provide natural rubber pads in flooring assembly as required to match existing adjacent conditions in thickness and spacing. WOOD FLOORING
4 F. Wall Base: CHAMPAIGN CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL 1. Johnsonite vented cove base, profile and color to match existing. PART 3 - EXECUTION 3.1 INSTALLATION A. Contractor to demo existing damaged flooring per photos, including vented cove base in area of work. B. Contractor to install new subflooring to match existing profile in repair area. C. Contractor to finger lace new maple into existing maple to provide strength to repair. D. Comply with flooring manufacturer's written installation instructions, but not less than applicable recommendations in NWFA's "Installation Guidelines: Wood Flooring." E. Provide expansion space at walls and other obstructions and terminations of flooring of not less than 3/4 inch. F. Vapor Retarder: Comply with NOFMA's "Installing Hardwood Flooring" for vapor retarder installation and the following: 1. Wood Flooring Nailed to Wood Subfloor: Install flooring over a layer of asphaltsaturated felt or approved equal as recommended by wood flooring manufacturer. 2. Wood Flooring Nailed to Sleepers over Concrete: Install flooring over a layer of polyethylene sheet with edges overlapped over sleepers and turned up behind baseboards. 3. Wood Flooring Installed Directly on Concrete: Install a layer of polyethylene sheet according to flooring manufacturer's written instructions. G. Solid-Wood, Strip and Plank Flooring: Blind nail or staple flooring to substrate. 3.2 SANDING A. Use coarse, medium and fine grade sandpaper. B. Machine-sand flooring to remove offsets, ridges, cups, and sanding-machine marks that would be noticeable after finishing. C. After sanding, buff floor using 100-grit screen or equal grit sandpaper, with a heavyduty buffing machine. WOOD FLOORING
5 D. Vacuum and tack with a clean cloth immediately before applying finish. E. Fill open-grained hardwood. F. Floor shall present a smooth surface without drum stop marks, gouges, streaks or shiners. 3.3 FINISHING A. Inspect floor to ensure that the surface is acceptable for finishing, completely free of sanding dust and perfectly clean. B. Apply floor-finish materials in number of coats recommended by finish manufacturer for application indicated, but not less than one coat of floor sealer and three finish coats. 1. Apply stains to achieve an even color distribution matching approved Samples. C. Buff and vacuum or tack between each coat after it dries. D. Apply game lines accurately after the seal coat, after buffing and vacuuming. Lay out in accordance with the existing conditions. For game lines, use current rules of association having jurisdiction. Lines shall be straight with sharp edges in colors selected by the Owner to match existing conditions. Game line paint shall be compatible with finish. 3.4 BASE INSTALLATION A. Affix resilient base to wall with recommended adhesive. Miter all corners carefully. Use premolded outside corners. Install aluminum thresholds as required, anchoring firmly in concrete floor beyond limits of wood flooring. 3.5 CLEAN UP A. Clean up all demolished items, unused materials and debris and remove from premises. Properly dispose of all waste materials. B. Contractor shall include the cost of dumpsters and waste disposal in their base bid. 3.6 MAINTENANCE A. Upon completion of floor installation, the Owner is to see that the care and maintenance instructions of the MFMA are followed. Failure to do so may void warranty. WOOD FLOORING
6 3.7 TRAINING CHAMPAIGN CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL A. Contractor shall conduct training session with Owner and Owner s representatives on care and maintenance procedures immediately following installation and prior to final payment. 3.8 CLOSE-OUT AND O&M DOCUMENTS A. Prior to final payment, the Contractor shall provide O&M information on care and maintenance in both electronic PDF format on a CD or thumb drive, as well as two (2) hard copies labeled and bound into 3-ring binders. B. Binders shall include copies of all approved submittals, product specification sheets, warranty information and contact information for Contractor and Manufacturer. END OF SECTION WOOD FLOORING
