Integrated Library Systems: An introduction Ontario Library Service-North First Nation Technology Summit Doris Rankin March 20, 2013
What is an ILS? specialized suite of modules manages the day-to-day transactions, business processes, data input and information retrieval for library related activities common modules are acquisitions, serials management, cataloguing, circulation and the online public access catalogue (OPAC) which provides a web interface to the Library s collection. 2
Integrated Library System Reference Cataloguing Circulation File Server: Database OPAC OPAC OPAC Acquisition Serials Management Running on a Local Area Network Courtesy of UNESCO ICTLIP Module 2 Lesson 1 3
Components of an ILS Support for fully bilingual libraries which allows for English and French interfaces for both staff and public Input (keyboard and machine loading), sorting, search, display and printing Combined database of English and French records, with full support of diacritics and special characters including those for upper and lower case letters 4
Components of an ILS Circulation, holds and multiple patron notification methods Acquisitions with various EDI solutions Cataloguing and authority control, MARC21 format support, RDA format support Serials Management 5
Components of an ILS Discovery and retrieval platform that integrates local, monographic, serial, owned, licensed, print, and digital content User empowerment features with ability to manage and maintain an account with reading lists, favourite searches and databases, reading history, reviews, ratings, tags, RSS feeds from account, holds, renewals, program registrations 6
Components of an ILS Serials Management Circulation back-up and/or Offlinecirculation Remote patron authentication to allow patrons to login once, and be able to search 3rd party databases, Overdrive and/or other products 7
Components of an ILS Local report generator with standard packaged reports and ability to create and run your own reports, at any time of the day Label production configurable for multiple formats and local printing preferences, i.e. single or multiples 8
Components of an ILS Inventory Control to maintain your own collection SIP2/NCIP to allow for self checkout ANSI/NISO Z39.50 to allow for searching and retrieving cataloguing records Ability to support barcode labels of various standards, i.e. Codabar and Code 39. Collection Agency software 9
Non-functional components Hardware servers, PC s, receipt printers, laser scanners Telecommunications high speed access (WAN), wireless LAN (internal) Database Management System (DBMS) Operating Systems - Windows or Unix 10
ILS Products Proprietary library purchases a license to the software but cannot make major changes no access to the programming code must contract with the vendor for annual maintenance 11
ILS Products Open Source the source code is freely available the software is freely usable these terms of open use are perpetuated indefinitely through the license 12
ILS Vendors Sirsi/Dynix Innovative Interfaces Ex Libris VTLS Infor Polaris Mandarin, Insignia, Apollo, Auto Graphics 13
ILS Open Source Products KOHA Evergreen (Sitka or Conifer) 14
What is impacting ILS products? Increased pressure on physical facilities Increased use of print collections Demand for e-books Need better tools to access multi-format collections Need to integrate locally digitized materials 15
What is impacting ILS products? Enhancing the experience for library patrons Self service options E-book purchase 16
Changes in technology Software as a Service (SaaS) Cloud Computing 17
Discovery Systems Still unsuccessful at integrating all resources Books, DVDs, CDs, etc. integrated in OPAC E-books searchable but takes patron to another interface Journal articles not always successfully searched Digitized collections separate, community resource databases, etc. 18
Discovery Systems Pre-built indexes of all resources libraries owns or subscribes to ILS data harvested and added to a consolidated index Digital collections, Ebsco databases, etc. all indexed together Provides more comprehensive search results to patron with holdings data and full-text articles 19
Web Scale Management Ex Libris Alma and OCLC Worldshare Total redesign which challenges traditional workflows Summons and Ebsco s Discovery Systems 20
What s next? Managing today s collections with yesterday s product. The ILS is dead 21
