THE SOLUTION

PhilGAP Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) approach applies recommendations and available knowledge to address environmental, economic and social sustainability from on-farm production and post-production processes resulting in safe and healthy food and non-food agricultural products. PhilGAP is based on compliance to certain standards on farm structure, environment and maintenance, farming practices and farm management

What Problem or Market Opportunity does PhilGAP addresses?

Philippine food exports: 3.85% of the total exports, generating $1.82B in foreign revenues in Top Agricultural Exports: Coconut, Banana, Pineapple, Mango Major export markets are the United States, Japan, the Netherlands, China, Hong Kong and Singapore.

Cavendish Lacatan The Philippine Fruit Industry may be one of the few industries in the country that is not wallowing from either a decreasing trend in production or lack of market Banana 2 nd largest agri export of the country. Data from , RP is 3 rd major exporting country of banana. 81% is imported by Japan. Saba chips Banana-q Wine Vinegar Latundan

Pineapple Philippines is the 3 rd largest producer of pineapple (Thailand, Brazil 2005)

Mango RP ranks 5 th in Asia in terms of production, 2 nd top exporter in 1998, although rate is fluctuating, the Carabao variety is recognized as the best tasting fruit of its kind, and the sweetest in the world.

Citrus ranks 4 th among the fruit crops with the greatest contribution to RP economy Calamansi (Philippine lemon) Citrus microcarpa Bunge unique only in the Philippines. Used as ingredient in juice, syrups, concentrates & purees, while the peel is processed into jams, candies, and marmalades Exported as either fresh, juice & juice concentrates, dried.

Tomato the country produces only about 150,000 MT. Ranks 3 rd largest producer in Southeast Asia. Usually processed to paste and sauce.

How was the solution developed?

Food Safety & Quality Issues Retailers requirements Consumer s expectations & changing priorities in what people want in a food Trade requirements (WTO) Emergence of other GAP programs

BUREAU OF AGRICULTURE & FISHERIES PRODUCTS STANDARDS Formulate & enforce standards of quality in the processing, preservation, packaging, labeling, importation, exportation, distribution & advertising of agricultural & fisheries products; Conduct research on product standardization, alignment of the local standards with the international standards
