Regulated Medical Waste Management and Proper Waste Segregation State-Specific Information New Jersey
Identifying & Segregating Regulated Medical Waste RMW in New Jersey Six Categories of Regulated Medical Waste 1. Cultures and stocks of infectious agents 2. Human pathological wastes 3. Human blood and blood products 4. Sharps 5. Certain animal wastes 6. Isolation wastes 7. Unused sharps Carpules are considered sharps.
Managing RMW Collection and Storage Sharps Requirements Generators (shippers) must properly select sharps containers in order to protect employees during transport. Definition of Sharps ü Needles and syringes ü Scalpel blades and lancets ü Glass pipettes, slides, and tubes ü Broken, contaminated glass ü Staples and wires (cardio-catheter wires) ü Orthodontic wires ü Disposable suture sets and biopsy forceps ü Electrocautery tips (no cauterizers or batteries) ü In NJ, unbroken glass is considered a sharp
Generator (Shipper) Registration with NJDEP Generators (shippers) must register with the NJ Dept of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) Each office or location that generates RMW must be registered A completed Annual Generator (shipper) Report (AGR) must be completed and sent to NJDEP by July 21 of each calendar year
NJDEP Resources Information on registration may be found by calling Medical Waste Technical Assistance may be found by calling
Identifying & Segregating Waste Pharmaceutical Waste ACCEPTABLE WASTE FOR THE WHITE DRUG DISPOSAL BOX Non-controlled substance, non-hazardous, pharmaceutical waste this is approximately 95% of the pharmaceutical waste stream Unused pills prescription or over the counter or partial vials Topical ointments in original packaging (or zip lock bag) WASTE FOR SEPARATE DISPOSAL Hazardous Waste Any product that is considered by the EPA as being ignitable, corrosive, reactive, or toxic Examples include: bulk chemotherapy drugs, etc. Not sure? the complete product name and NDC number to Controlled Substances Products listed on Schedule I-V of Title 21 United States Code Controlled Substances Act Examples include: Opiates (morphine and codeine), muscle relaxants, depressants, stimulants (amphetamines) For a complete list, refer to section 1308 of the most recent issue of Title 21 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Part 1300 to end (21 CFR 1308) Use red bag for pharma waste

Secondary Container Name, address of generator (shipper) Date of shipment, and Name of the transporter Labeling & Documentation New Jersey Requirement Transporter NJDEP registration number Identification of the contents as medical waste or infectious waste or display biohazardous symbol.
Labeling & Documentation New Jersey Requirement New Jersey RMW Tracking Form contains 6 copies. Generators (shipper) must complete the generator (shipper) portion and sign the certification: Completes items 1 through 15 Signs the certification at Item 15 Transporter: Verifies the quantity Notes any discrepancies in Item 23 Completes and signs item 16
