WV Poultry Energy Audits
Completed energy audits of four farms in 2009 April 30, May 7, May 21, & May 27 Collaboration between the WVU Industrial Assessment Center and IOF-WV Funded by the WV Division of Energy
Five Key Steps for Good Wintertime Ventilation for Least Fuel Cost * 1. Insulation 2. Testing a house for air leaks 3. Sealing air leaks 4. Getting a good ventilation airflow pattern 5. Setting the timer for the proper ventilation rate * Alabama Cooperative Extension System, Auburn University
Energy Audit Focus Areas House Tightness Insulation Heating Equipment Ventilation Equipment Lighting
House Tightness Static Pressure Test Run one 48 or two 36 fans with all doors and inlets closed Measure static pressure Smoke emitters to identify location of air leaks Measured air infiltration at selected locations
Observations Results from 15 houses Static pressure range of 0.06 to 0.23 inches of H 2 O Measured air infiltration at 80 locations Estimated heat loss of 782 MMBtu per year or 8500 gallons per year of propane

Leakage Area vs. Static Pressure (20,000 cfm fan) Rule of thumb: Maximum acceptable leakage area is 0.65 ft 2 per 1,000 ft 2 of floor space. Courtesy of the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service
Desired Air Flow Pattern Warming air 20 F doubles the capacity to hold moisture
Recommendations Seal cracks with caulking Clean louver-type fan shutters or cover with plastic if not used Install weather stripping on doors Install hardware latches to pull doors tightly closed Sonneborn-Sonolastic NP Polyurethane expansion joint sealant Specifically for sealing expansion joints in commercial buildings Made by BASF Building Systems
Insulation Relationship Between Increasing R-value and Heat Loss Courtesy of the Alabama Cooperative Extension System, Auburn University

Example Assumptions: ft long house with a 2 ft foundation wall - R-value of the concrete block is 1 and the R-value of closed cell polyurethane foam is 7 (one inch thick) - Inside temperature is 80 F and outside temperature is 40 F Heat Loss (Btu/hr) = Area (ft 2 )/R-value x (Outside Inside Temperature) Heat Loss (concrete block) = 64,000 Btu/hr Heat Loss (concrete block w/polyurethane insulation) = 8,000 Btu/hr At 92,000 Btu/gallon the energy saved in 24 hours is equivalent to nearly 15 gallons of propane

Recommendations R-19 ceiling insulation Consider adding fiberglass batts in ceiling R-11 wall insulation Consider using polyurethane foam insulation on end doors and foundation
Heating Forced Air vs. Radiant

Stratification with Forced Air Furnaces* * Courtesy of the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension
Heating System Comparison* Four curtain-sided houses were studied One house equipped with forced air furnaces One house with radiant brooders on the brooding end and forced air furnaces on the non-brooding end Two houses were equipped with radiant tube heaters One of the houses was converted to a totally enclosed house using polyurethane insulation * Field study performed by the College of Agricultural and Environment Science at the University of Georgia
Comparison Results Fuel Usage for One Flock
Ventilation Observations Monitoring, adjustment, and cleaning of air-handling equipment is recommended Dirty shutters cause air leaks and inefficient ventilation
Ventilation * * Field test performed by the Alabama Cooperative Extension System, Auburn University and Hired Hand Manufacturing Co. of Bremen, AL

Lighting
Lighting Observations Extensive use of energy efficient lighting Only one recommendation was made to replace 60 watt incandescent bulbs with 15 watt cold cathode Estimated savings exceeded $10,000 annually
* Field tests performed by the Alabama Cooperative Extension System at Auburn University *
USDA Rural Energy for America Energy Audit Assistance Program WVU awarded funding to provide energy assessment services for Agricultural Producers Rural Small Businesses Requires 25% cost share by audit recipient
