5 Disciplines in Civil and Env. Engineering Structural engineering: conception, analysis, design, and construction of components to resist loads (think solid mechanics! beams and columns, static and dynamic loads, gravity, wind, snow-- ((welcome to Buffalo!)), and earthquakes) Transportation engineering: plan, design, build, operate and maintain systems of transport (think safety, efficiency, and convenience!) Hydraulic engineering: design of hydraulic structures, sewage channels, dams, management of waterways, flood protection, hydroelectric-power development (think Niagara Falls!) 5
6 Disciplines in Civil and Env. Engineering Environmental engineering: planning design, construction and operation of water, and wastewater treatment facilities in cities and industries analysis of surface water and groundwater quality planning for the disposal and reuse of wastewaters, and the collection, transport, processing, recovery and disposal of solid wastes (think...never mind!) Geotechnical engineering: study of the behavior of soils under the influence of loading forces and soilwater interactions (think retaining walls and earth dams!) 6
