2 Who is Matthias Böhm? After studying Chemical-Engineering at the University of Erlangen- Nürnberg, M. Böhm joined the Central Engineering Department at Bayer AG, in Until end of 2003 he worked in multiple investment projects for Bayer s Plastics Division as Process Engineer and Project Manager, as well as Owner Representative for Bayer in a LSTK Joint-Venture project with DuPont. In 2004 M. Böhm switched from the Engineering Department into the Process Technology Department of Bayer Technology Services. There he was responsible for the Conceptual Design of new processes for the production of biofuels. From 2005 to 2010 he held a principal position as Global Isocyanate Specialist for the MDI production process of Bayer MaterialScience. His main areas were process development, IP-management, knowhow transfer, trouble-shooting support and project scope development. In 2010 he relocated to Texas, USA to first lead the process engineering of an investment project and afterwards to take over the unit lead position for the implementation of the project in the Isocyanate Distillation Unit. Since 2013 he is responsible as Head of Energy Excellence at Covestro for the Global Energy Efficiency Program and energy related topics, like energy regulations and emission trading.

3 Who is Vijay Kumar Garg? Vijay is the Global Energy Manager for the Polycarbonate Division of Covestro which involves 5 BPA Plants and 5 Polycarbonate Plants in worldwide locations. He is responsible for developing, driving, coordinating and supporting energy efficiency projects across the 10 plants. He joined Bayer (now Covestro) in 2000 as Sr, Project Engineer at Bayer s Maptaphut, Thailand production site and the worked as Energy Manager from 2004 to He moved to his current position in Antwerp in Vijay obtained his Engineering Degree in Mechanical Engineering from University of Indore, India in year He has a wide experience in a range of Industries (Synthetic Fiber, Iron and Steel, Industrial Gases) across various positions.

4 Covestro AG Covestro (formerly Bayer MaterialScience) manufactures and develops materials such as coatings, adhesives and sealants, polycarbonates (CDs, DVDs), polyurethanes (automotive seating, insulation for refrigerating appliances) etc. The main industries served are automotive manufacturing and supply, electrical engineering and electronics, construction and home products, and sports and leisure. Covestro has approximately 30 production sites around the globe. The company is divided into 3 principal Business Units (BU) that comprises the core segment of BMS. These are: BU Coatings, Adhesives, Specialties (BU CAS) BU Polycarbonates (BU PCS) BU Polyurethanes (BU PUR)

6 The Interview What are the main current challenges regarding energy and resource efficient production and what are the specific challenges related to your company? As an early mover the chemical industry has already developed and implemented new processes and process improvements related to resource and energy efficiency in the past. Especially Covestro was very much focused on improving resource and energy efficiency over the past decade with its EnMS STRUCTese. Further improvements are becoming more complex and therefore less economic. How is your company going to tackle those challenges? We try to have a much broader view on improvement projects, also taking other positive aspects besides the sole raw material or energy savings into the evaluation. This includes also avoided long term investments in infrastructure or additional supply contracts e.g. How would you categorise the importance of Resource and Energy Efficiency for suitable growth? Resource and Energy Efficiency are of high importance for continuous and sustainable growth as with the existing infrastructure you can continue to grow with lesser investments. On the other side building new infrastructure facilities takes time and money during which time new industries have to wait. Also limitations of raw materials and energy can be tackled by improved efficiency. How does your company manage energy efficiency programs with a high degree of complexity? The Company follows a structured approach in dealing with energy efficiency programs. Plant energy consumptions and improvement potentials globally are analysed and categorised following a set of fixed rules.

7 The Interview Where do you see the future of energy management? What factors will be influential? The future of energy management lies not only in finding savings potentials but to be able to meet the ever evolving regulations, legislations and legal requirements. Government legislations and support in driving energy efficiency will be the most influential factor. What measures do you take to reduce your company s carbon footprint? The company s carbon footprints is sought to be reduced by a) deploying energy efficient production processes b) implementing energy efficiency projects c) looking for the use of renewable projects. How important is the usage of block chain technology in your company? And what are your ambitions for the future usage of it? As a big polymer producer our processes mainly require heat, normally supplied as steam. Since steam can t be distributed over far distances our production sites are connected to local CHP. Depending on the production site this CHP is operated by Covestro itself or by a third party with a dedicated contract. So far we do not see any advantages for us in using block chain technology for purchasing energy. In which technical areas are you active to reduce energy (e.g. Co-processing, thermal energy etc.)? Mainly process improvements in our own proprietary production processes and heat integration within processes and between processes on production site level..
