3 Exercise 2: What s the word? (4-5 minutes) Read the following dialog with your tutor and try to use context clues to fill in the blanks with the most appropriate word. You can find the missing word from the pool of words at the bottom. Ms. Rogers is the executive director of a company. She is discussing the criteria for performance evaluation with Mr. Bobson, the head of the human resources department. Ms. Rogers: Good morning, Mr. Bobson. Have you received the my secretary sent you? Mr. Bobson: Yes. I have also read the set by the executive committee in promoting an employee. We will use this as a guide in the next quarterly performance evaluation. Ms. Rogers: Good. The committee has decided that an employee should work for the company for two years before he or she can be promoted. Mr. Bobson: That is true. More importantly, professionalism and excellent work will also be major considerations in promoting an employee. Choices: a. employment b. at least c. criteria d. quality Page 3
4 II. GRAMMAR REVIEW: General Description: Topic: Adverbs of Place (5-6 minutes) Adverbs of place are used to indicate where something happens. It is used to indicate a place of movement. It is usually written: 1. After the main verb: subject + verb + adverb Example: a. I watched everywhere. b. I went around. c. I looked up. 2. After the object : subject + verb+ direct object + adverb Example: a. She brought the plants outside. b. They built a new store nearby. c. They ate the cake inside. Remember: An adverb doesn't take an object. These adverbs can usually be found at the end of a sentence. Examples: 1. He stood up. 2. She sat down 3. They went out at six o clock last night. Comprehension Check: Which of the following is an adverb of place?
