1 Viridor Street Trees Helping to grow Red Rose Forest
2 THE NAME VIRIDOR IS TAKEN FROM THE LATIN TO BECOME GREEN AND THIS NEW PARTNERSHIP WILL SEE THAT VIRIDOR AND ITS KEY PARTNERS CONTRIBUTE TO THIS VISION Viridor is working in partnership with Red Rose Forest to offer its key recycling customers the opportunity to work together to provide an innovative street tree planting initiative in North West England. This will make a real difference to the area, to local businesses and to people s lives. As well as providing added value for Viridor s customers, this initiative will make a real difference to the area, to local businesses and to people s lives The recycling activities of Viridor and its major commercial customers are at the heart of the partnership. In this one year pilot project, Viridor has initially committed to donate 75,000 to tree planting in the area. The street tree planting projects supported with these funds will be linked to the locations or CSR priorities of Viridor s top paper and cardboard recycling customers. This partnership will support the Government s new National Tree Planting Campaign The Big Tree Plant which was launched in WHY SUPPORT STREET TREES? Street trees improve the standard of living in urban areas by: Creating a lush green backdrop in urban areas and improving the physical appearance of streets. Helping to manage climate change. Street trees not only act as a carbon sink for carbon dioxide, the trees also have a cooling effect on local air temperatures, whilst leaves and branches provide vital shade. Tackling environmental issues associated with city living such as air and noise pollution as well as providing a range of benefits to health and wellbeing. Encouraging community interaction and improving community spirit by giving local people the opportunity to get involved in the design of their scheme and to lead on the consultation process. Fostering a sense of ownership in communities and empowering them to change their neighbourhoods for the better. Individual trees between three and eight metres tall will be planted on residential streets, with a plaque/marker to recognise the support of Viridor, Red Rose Forest and the major recycling customer. Where possible, these projects will be undertaken in the vicinity of the recycling customer s business activities, maximising awareness for Viridor and its customers. There will also be the opportunity for city centre trees, if this is a better fit with the customer s CSR and communications priorities. Viridor Street Trees is a Community Forests North West (CFNW) project in partnership with Viridor and Red Rose Forest. CFNW is the charitable company (charity no ) that supports the Mersey, Red Rose and Pennine Edge Forests. Viridor Street Trees: In partnership with Red Rose Forest 2
3 FOCUS ON: MANCHESTER UNITED Planting site: Gorse Hill Estate, Trafford THE SITE Together Viridor, Red Rose Forest, Trafford Council and Manchester United will plant approximately 20 street trees on a popular residential road close to Old Trafford football ground. This is an excellent opportunity to engage the local community in street tree planting and generate positive PR exposure for each partner. Serviceberry These projects will be undertaken in the vicinity of the customer s business activities, environments improving local Local schools and residents groups will be consulted about the project, receive information packs and help to maintain the trees. There will also be a half-day nature session for pupils at a local school. Schools and residents will be given the opportunity to learn about the effects of climate change and be inspired to reduce their carbon footprint. As the street often becomes very busy on match days, this is a great way for Manchester United to say thank you to the community. This project will show that Viridor and Manchester United are committed to working at a local level to improve the environment. As well as generating fantastic positive PR, it will look excellent in both partners CSR report s. The project will also strengthen relationships between businesses, customers and the community at every level. SPECIFICATION Area: Gorse Hill Residential Estate No. of trees: approximately 20 (all on pavement) Tree species: Serviceberry (or appropriate alternative) Tree height: approximately 4.5 metres Audience: Residents, community groups, local schools IMD: In the top 20-25% of most deprived areas nationally BENEFITS This will make a huge positive difference to the local environment and people s lives. High brand visibility as the street is a well used route by fans and residents. Great PR and CSR opportunity which highlights Viridor and Manchester United s commitment to the local community and improving the environment. An opportunity to build upon an already positive relationship between Viridor and Manchester United. Viridor Street Trees: In partnership with Red Rose Forest 3
