CDM Lusaka Sustainable Energy Project and CDM Cook Stove Project Kupang 1 A strategic solution to stop deforestation caused by charcoal consumption in Zambia and to overcome fossil fuel consumption in households in Indonesia financed by carbon credits Examples for potential Programmatic CDM Projects Klaus Trifellner, Manager Africa and South East Asia Cologne, 9th May 2008

A) CDM LUSAKA SUSTAINABLE ENERGY PROJECT saves 150,000 tonnes CO2 per year by replacing charcoal with renewable biomass in 30,000 urban households B) CDM COOK STOVE PROJECT KUPANG 1 saves 40,000 tonnes CO2 per year by replacing kerosene with renewable biomass in 30,000 urban households 2

Charcoal Production and Usage is Harmful Environment: leads to deforestation destroys fertile land causes erosion produces greenhouse gases: Charcoal warms the whole world Science news, Dec People: is an unhealthy, hard work 3

Charcoal Production is Inefficient 1 kg of charcoal has the energy content of 2 kg of wood, but needs 6 kg of wood for production Trunks and thick branches are required, causing deforestation Green house gas emissions of charcoal production are high 4

Logging of Trees for Household Energy Must be Stopped Deforestation caused by the production of charcoal affects many areas in Africa This trend is continuing It will be decisive for the future survival of millions of people to stop deforestation 5

Current Fuel Situation in Indonesia Shortage in supply of kerosene High expenses for public and private budgets due to increasing costs of kerosene A sustainable solution is needed urgently 6

Increasing Cost of Energy Burdens Budgets Average yearly cost for kerosene for a household has increased from 50 USD to 200 USD Currently, the expenses for the government to provide subsidy is more than 200 USD per household per year Switch to affordable renewable energy is needed urgently 7

Cooking System Save80 enables the efficient use of waste wood Cooking System Save80 Extremely little firewood consumption High acceptance in developing countries Close cooperation with UNHCR, CARE and Diakonie (25,000 cook stoves Save80 implemented in refugee camps)! With 1 kg waste wood a substantial meal for 50 persons was cooked in a field test of UNHCR! 250 g of small sticks are enough to boil 6 l water or to cook 7 kg of rice! waste wood from forest maintenance is sufficient 8

Instead of 7 tonnes wood for charcoal per household per year only 0.5 tonnes of waste wood are needed before after Switch from charcoal production to the supply of households with easily available small sticks 9

Application of new CDM methodology SSC I.E. in Lusaka Switch from non renewable biomass to renewable biomass Possibly more applicable by a future Programmatic CDM methodology for this project type because of identical baseline identical user behaviour identical technology Emission reduction of tonnes of CO2eq per year in households through the planned project 10

Application of methodology SSC I.C. in Kupang Switch from fossil fuel (kerosene) to renewable biomass Potential for Programmatic CDM all over Indonesia with 15 to 25 million households Emission reduction of tonnes of CO2eq per year in households 11

Benefits of the CDM LUSAKA SUSTAINABLE ENERGY PROJECT Long term solution to reverse the trend of deforestation Relieves financial pressure on households from buying charcoal or electricity Further positive effects for the households (health, reduction of greenhouse gas emissions) Basis for further projects in Zambia and for whole Africa 12

Benefits of the CDM COOK STOVE PROJECT KUPANG 1 Long term solution to overcome use of high cost fossil fuels Relieves financial pressure on households for buying Kerosene Further positive effects for the households (health, reduction of greenhouse gas emissions) Basis for further projects all over Indonesia 13

Proof of Concept in Two Breakthrough Projects To overcome financial barriers proof of concept has to be demonstrated on pilot projects All steps and procedures of this project types have to be trained for duplication (as experienced with CDM Solar Cooker Project Aceh 1) Financial feasibility will be demonstrated in two pilot projects to enable a global breakthrough in stopping deforestation and switching from fossil fuels to renewable energy in households 14
