Shift2Rail - to deliver the ERRAC vision of the future railway? International Railway Summit 17 February 2016, Vienna Prof Andy Doherty ERRAC Chairman CTO Network Rail 1

ERRAC s ROLE ERRAC is the ETP (European Technology Platform for Rail) Broad membership from all sectors of the railway industry Operators Associations Academia Industry and Suppliers Passenger and Freight Groups Currently supported with EC projects FOSTERAIL (Innovation Agenda, Route Maps of future needs SETRIS (Cross Modal integration across whole transport sectors) It was the ERRAC innovation agenda set out in 2012 that created the case for increased research investment in rail and hence Shift2Rail!!! ERRAC s next target is to set out the argument for Shift2Rail2 2

Strategic Rail Research Innovation Agenda A revised set of Route Maps will be submitted to the EC in March 1. Technology & Innovation 2. Customer Experience 3. Strategy & Economics 4. Safety and Security 5. Capacity Performance and Competitiveness 6. Control, Command and Communication 7. Energy and Environment 8. Infrastructure 9. Rolling Stock 10. IT and other Enabling Technologies 11. Training and Education 3

ERRAC and Shift2Rail - What is the linkage? ERRAC Shift2Rail Route Maps Operator s Railway Technology Strategies Suppliers Business plans European Unions Members States Shift2Rail Master Plan MAAP (multi annual action plan Specific Technology Demonstrators 4

Shift2Rail Progress Shift2Rail has now selected 17 Associate Members; Aerfitec, Amadeus, AZD Prada, CFW, DB, EUROC, Faiveley, Hacon, INDRA, Kapsch, Knorr Bremse, MerMec, SmartRaCon, Smart demain, SNCF, Talgo, VVAC. Open and Closed Calls to the value of 170M were issued on the 17 th Dec, submissions to be returned by the 17 th March Shift2Rail to reach autonomous status May 2016 Target for work start is 1 st September 2016 Further annual calls will be issued late 2016, and then each year 5

IP1 Trains 7

The new train result could be; Common Euro standardised train architectures, bodyshells, traction packages, running gear which are then configurable to high speed or suburban operating characteristics The Door systems and interiors are the differentiators that meet customer service demands, these would be flexible and configurable over time and to service demand The Digital train Provision of continuous communications, mobile and data services (each train will be a gateway for all passenger, train control, train asset maintenance etc. Train control system to match ETCS/ATO needs, and ultimately convoy and virtual coupling capability Self diagnostics and track measurement fully integrated, continuous data and status condition monitoring Self steering/low damage trains (see mechatronic bogies) Step free access! 8

Mechatronics - Bogie Consider the latest fighter aircraft, airliners, some cars, and certainly F1 all use mechatronics They are designed to be unstable and then stabilised by computer and the actuators Railways could use mechatronics in the train bogies too, a fast reacting but stable bogie Opportunity; have we opened the envelope of; Increased Speed, curving rules? Increased line Capacity? Reduced Track and bogie degradation? A M Doherty Date

The railway problem!! CAPACITY On busy motorway you cannot see the road for the cars! Even on a full railway you cannot see the train on the track!! A M Doherty Date

Convoying on the Railway Date Railways what is their future - Andy Doherty 12

First Steps of IP2 Fully develop all the functions and capabilities of ETCS L2 Driver Advisory Systems Automation to GOA2 ERTMS functions ETCS L3 and Autonomous train control to GOA4 Train to train communication Signal overlap rules based upon assured braking performance, control system adapts for different train capabilities New interlocking philosophy; design, functionality, approval (aerospace design warranty logic) Traffic Management linked to dynamic customer information systems in/on the railway and to external feeds (Travel Apps etc) Interactive Customer Information/Ticketing/Internet of Things! Interlinked with IP4 13

Train Convoying and Autonomy Autonomous train convoying, ETCS L4 and beyond Requires Train Assured Braking capability Radical new overlap and control functions Virtual coupling of trains Robust secondary safety features, like derailment containment, on board obstacle detection Ideally self steering trains to further maximise capacity Longer term development programme in S2R IP2 and maybe Shift2Rail2? 14

03/03/2016 AMD V10 15

New track support system Ballast Slab Low Installation Quick 24hrs Unreliable Geometry Tamping reducing life Ballast 20 years High Installation New build Good Geometry Issue fixing & fastening Sub grade Sleeper 60 years Under sleeper support Life good Benefits: Construction Material Simple Climate Carbon New track support system Take good features from above KPIs: noise system cost availability maintenance Date A M Doherty 16

Improved Track and Substructure Potential slab and ballast combined design provides geometry stability of slab with flexibility of maintenance of ballast! Concrete? bed Slip formed concrete or 25metre pre-cast Sections. Cable Mgmt Ducts Side wall increased in height to provide derailment protection Fastening Sleeper - New shape? New capabilities? with under sleeper pads separate or integrated? Permeable section(lattice?) for drainage All new components are provisioned for sensors A M Doherty Date

Mechatronic Point Possibilities Inherently fail-safe locking philosophy s using technology and machine science already in use in other sectors (e.g. Aerospace). Adaptive self adjusting switch blade movement actuators and/or stretcher bars, using embedded and differential detectors to assure safety Why do we move the front of the switch? Moving other parts of the switch? In different planes Can we remove the open switch blades to reduce the enhanced consequence risk to derailed trains? Positive train steering capability would radically change the dynamics of the train and the switch interaction Do we need to have any moving parts if the train has sufficient and safe steering capability Date A M Doherty 18

Infrastructure Asset Management Energy harvesting technology reduces the need for running supply cables Data Automation of inspection, data collection Service train asset data collection Data harvesting and transfer Integration, connectivity of all devices and sensors of the above Information Automated data processing and analysis Creation of 3D spacial envelopes Proactive Maintenance strategies and actions Prediction Integration of NDT and Thermography into automated predictive tools and models, with their use expanded to all assets Date A M Doherty 19

Intelligent Maintenance Autonomous mountable/demountable vehicles/robots Uses the 3D asset management spacial envelope The railway version of the self driving car but for maintenance!! Routine inspection of difficult locations; e.g. tunnels) Maintenance activities; e.g. rail welding Greater mechanisation of infrastructure manual tasks We are considering how to utilise 3D printing and discussing the printing of a crossing nose and other track constituents Date A M Doherty 20

Stations Fully connected station (continuous data, information, wifi, tracking Ticket barriers? (how and do we need/use them) with electronic ticketing? Passenger safety security and environment Automated continuous CCTV and other system monitoring of people and movement Platform edge doors at congested stations and platform with through fast trains Use of cross platform interchange utilised wherever possible Service Philosophy develops to minimum time to platform occupancy and not timetable at busy stations to improve dwell and loading times 21

SEAMLESS TRAVEL ACROSS EUROPE (IP4) 7 Technical Demonstrators 03/03/2016 AMD V10 22

A new service concept Where trains wait for passengers not passengers wait for trains!! At busy suburban stations It is a 5 min turn and go service, there is no obvious timetable The service reacts to ticket sales, people count, crowd sourcing to provide trains when needed The platforms are enclosed with edge doors Travel is priced to demand, empty trains are cheaper! A M Doherty Date

SUSTAINABLE & ATTRACTIVE EUROPEAN FREIGHT TRANSPORT IP5 TD5 Propulsion TD1 Electrictrifiation controls SUSTAINA-BLE & ATTRACTIVE EUROPEAN FREIGHT TRANSPORT TD4 Terminals and marshalling TD2 Access, operations, communication and data TD3 Wagon, mechanical 24 03/03/2016 AMD V10

Innovation in Freight Work will focus on transferring the advanced railway functionality developed in the passenger sector to freight, TRL 4-7 Development of intelligent freight trains, full brake control through for enhanced brake performance Improved wagon dynamics to reduce damage and increase speed Fully integrated consignment management for railway handling and forwarders tracking systems. 25

Conclusions The combination of all the innovations Dramatic capacity increase 100%? Reduced maintenance costs by 50%, whilst improving asset life and railway reliability? A different and greatly better passenger experience Further improvements in railway energy efficiency, can we reduce our energy usage by 50%? Hopefully this gives us some encouragement that we can change and improve the railways! 26

Thank you for your attention 27
