2 RHEOALTE CVS -11 New Generation Associative Thickener Introduction Regulations have driven decorative formulations to very low VOC levels, demanding high performance binders. The industry requires VOC- and APEO-free rheological modifiers that are compatible with these new binder systems. Paint formulators are challenged to maintain the desired coating properties in these modern formulations. Rheological needs identified for newer formulations include: Improved sag/flow balance Colour viscosity stability Improved colour properties was developed to provide a solution to these needs. However it also develops thixotropy and this leads to the superb combination of improved sag resistance, together with smooth brush-out and levelling. 2

Use levels might vary for different tinted paint systems. A ladder study should be done to optimize them. In determining the required use levels Elementis recommends first adjusting KU viscosity to the desired value with. If an ICI builder is also required at this point, RHEOLATE 212 or RHEOLATE 350 can be added. PVC 50% Styrene Acrylic Styrene Acrylics are a standard class of latex for waterbased decorative coatings. They have broad formulation latitude for exterior and interior paints, concrete protective coatings and exterior insulation and finishing systems (EIFS). 4 RHEOALTE CVS -11 New Generation Associative Thickener PVC 50% Vina-VeoVa Vina-VeoVa are popular latex systems used for interior and exterior paints, textured coatings, and wall primers (low, medium and high PVC). Typical binder characteristics: Particle size µm, MFT 5 C showed an excellent balance of all tested application characteristics. superior balance between sag resistance and brushability outstanding roller spatter resistance perfect colour stability ideal brush drag for high coverage Practical examples in various binder technologies PVC 50% Vinylacetate/Ethylene (VAE) VAE is the standard latex for low emission interior matt and satin paints. The latex is typically stabilised with an emulsifier and polyvinylalcohol which will reduce associative thickener efficiency. Typical binder characteristics: Particle size µm, MFT 0 C VAE-latexes are generally quite insensitive to changes in associative thickeners. They are therefore considered robust and easy to work with. outperformed the competitor in both brush drag and colour stability. PVC 30% Pure Acrylic Pure acrylic dispersions are recommended for exterior coatings, mansonry paints containing coalescing agent, deep shade paints, external wall insulation systems, plasters and textured coatings. They usually require a Newtonian co-thickener to develop brush drag. Typical binder characteristics: Particle size 0.12 µm, MFT 18 C. In this formulation showed excellent roller spatter resistance and slightly improved brush drag without unduly sacrificing sag resistance. Colour stability was also good. With a co-thickener, both brushability and brush drag would be further significantly enhanced. 4

5 PVC 19% Acrylic Copolymer Core shell dispersions are recommended for gloss paint with good block resistance and chemical resistance. They usually require a Newtonian co-thickener to develop brush drag. Typical binder characteristics: Particle size 0.12 µm, MFT 8 C showed excellent roller spatter resistance. Otherwise it at least matched the performance of the competitor, again providing improved brush drag. This would then reduce the level of co-thickener required. Conclusion I In a wide range of binder systems the outperforms or matches the rheological and application performances of the. Outstanding results are particularly obtained in mid PVC formulations. Practical example: Storage stability in PVC 50% Vina-VeoVa The paint based on showed excellent storage stability in both white and tinted formulations. After 4 weeks of storage at ambient temperatures the rheological behaviour was totally unaffected. The competitor on the other hand showed significant loss of viscosity, both on storage and when tinted. Similar results were also found in the paints based on the other latex systems. 5

They were used in the PVC 50% formulation based on 2 different binder technologies. 1- Colour viscosity stability Iron oxide yellow tinters: architectural and TINT-AYD AQ 4 6

7 Black tinters: universal architectural, industrial, decorative, joinery and TINT-AYD AQ 3 Conclusion II In both binder technologies, showed significantly less viscosity reduction in comparison to the competitor with all tinters tested. Across all the technologies, the showed greatly enhanced colour stability. 2 - Colour acceptance Colour acceptance (rub-out) was measured for the black-tinted formulations. In almost every case the showed superior colour acceptance (lower E) compared to the competitor. 7

Scandex mixing of the same sample after tinter addition. A lower E value corresponds to a faster colour development and equilibration. The showed generally much faster colour development after tinter was added to the base formulation.
